HMS BAYANO

6 posts in this topic

Hi All

I recently bought a WW1 death plaque named to a fireman who was casualty onboard HMS Bayano. Does anybody know what sort of job a naval fireman did.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Graham

Fireman = Stoker

Bayano was an auxiliary cruiser.

In WWI there were two seperate ships called Bayano.

Bayano (1) 6,100 tons; launched 1913 in 1914 became Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Bayano, 1915 torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U27 off Ireland; loss of 197 lives.

Bayano (2) 6,788 tons; launched 1915 Ordered as Cauca then named Arguan, but launched as Bayano, from 1915-1918 also became Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Bayano, 1956 scrapped.

At the UK National Archives, there are several passenger lists for Bayano (1) and also her registration documents. There are Ship's Logs for Bayano (2) and passenger lists for her commensing in December 1918.

This is something of a long shot, but i'm researching an Ernest Cole on the Pirbright War Memorial who has no details shown. I've discovered a fireman of that name killed on HMS Bayano in 1915 & wonder if the plaque you have could possibly be for him?
