EDWARD1

Yorkshire Regiment/Royal Fusiliers

Is it possible to determine when T W Simpson joined the Yorkshire Regiment and then transferred to the Royal Fusiliers if the only documentation you have located is the MIC as attached ?

The CWGC lists him as killed in action 27th Sept 1918.

Thanks in anticipation

Eddie

Most Royal Fusiliers medal roll books will record the date of service abroad with the various battalions, so worth a look at Kew.

Steve.

Hi Edward

I have had a look on ancestry his service papers do not seem to have survived

Do we have a Birth year for him ?

the following is from the work of the late Bob Coulson

Born and enlisting in Middlesbrough, Thomas William Simpson did his war service

with the 4th battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, City of London Regiment.

Killed in action during the Battle of the Canal du Nord, Private Simpson lost his life on

September 27th 1918 and today lies in Fifteen Ravine British Cemetery in the village

of Villers-Plouich to the north east of Peronne.

regards Ray

Thanks Steve and Ray.

As an Ancestry subscriber I have his History up to 1911, the CWGC info for his death plus the R Fus 4th Btn War Diaries for his movements during the War. I was hoping to fill in the Attestation/Transfer dates for both Regiments.

The various local War memorial scrolls on line all name him and the RF and date when KIA, but none mention the Yorks or enlistment date. Will keep digging.

I believe Thomas was born in Middlesbrough in 1881 or 1882. He married Sarah Bolton and in 1911 they were living in Middlesbrough .... Sarah remarried in 1921 to John Spendlove but she sadly died in 1924 in Middlesbrough, her age at death was consistent with her age in 1911. I've traced the deaths of the other Thomas W Simpsons in Middlesbrough which were all after the war, yet, the death for the above T.W. Simpson is missing suggesting he died in WW1.

Name Age
Thomas Wm Simpson 30
Sarah Elizabeth Simpson 30
Mary Ann Simpson 9
May Simpson

8

Jonathan Simpson 4
Hellen Simpson 1
Walter Lacey

50

You have the correct family

Thomas served in the theatre of war  with the 12th Bn Yorks Pte 22642 from 1/6/16 to 4/9/18 before  being transferred to the 4th Bn Royal Fusiliers (Pte GS/79948)

He served with the Fusiliers from 5/9/18 to the  27/9/18

The register of soldiers effects list his widow Sarah E as the legatee of his effects

He was the husband of Sarah Elizabeth Simpson (nee Bolton)

The couple married in Middlesbrough in 1900
