Hewlett & Blondeau Ltd Photo's

10 posts in this topic

A photo album kept by a Miss Robinson, a worker at the above wartime factory has come into my possesion.

An AVRO manufacturers plate is riveted to the cover and inside are many pictures of an all (predominently) femail workforce.

I am in the initial stages of research but will post what I know in the hope of further information.

The factory was in Leagrave, just outside Luton in Bedfordshire and was called the Omnia Works. They are listed as Aeroplane Manufacturers and Aeronautical Engineers, Contractors to HM War Office and Admiralty.

All aircraft appear to be Avro 504's and numbers visible are as follows.

F9773, F9772 F9767.

The Hewlett family appear to have been early aviation pioneers, both Mr and Mrs Hewlett worked at the factory and a son is listed as a "famous airman"

I will post all the pictures as soon as time allows. Any help greatly appreciated

Thank you very much for the great photographs. The aeroplanes are, as you said, Avro 504Ks built by Hewlett and Blondeau Ltd in batch F9696-F9845.

Thanks again for posting the fascinating photographs.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k116/rasterscanning/b.jpg is interesting as it's not an Avro 504K, but an Armstrong-Whitworth FK 3. Hewlett & Blondeau built two batches of these machines under licence: A8091-A8140 and B9501-B9800.

Best wishes

Gareth

Here the whole factory appear to be gathered with a 504 ending in 35 or 85.

Cheers

Here a young lady appears to be marking out a piece of wood from a template. The template is marked Avro Fuselage.
