Yes, please. The name of Stella Rose Boue-Blandy, QAIMNS, is supposed to be on the Ainsdale memorial. May be shortened to Blandy. With regards to Liscard the name of Jane Ellen Howdle, Mercantile Marine, should be there. Thank you.

I am a Dorset lad by birth and hence all of the west country needs I have managed to get, with a few exceptions, myself. The one left in Dorset is in a private cemetery (Sherborne Castle) and a tragic tale it is. So I am treading carefully and will try and arrange to get it myself - eventually. But your kind offer is very much appreciated. Thank you, also, for the photograph of Asst. Nurse. Hook, QAIMNS. As you say, a death the day before the cease fire is sad. I do not yet know what she died of but suspect the dreaded Spanish 'flu. She was not a local girl - just stationed locally, I guess. Out of interest there is another of my girls on Portland. Both graves I have visited.

I took a trip to Southwold last week and spent about 3 hours looking for Diana Reynolds Smith... eventually admitted defeat and thought the little museum nearby might be of help. The lady there was wonderful, and knew a little about her, but unfortunately we were unable to locate the grave. I left a request with the museum, and must say that they have been wonderful in their help. The dates might be important for you. The following is an email I received:

I am following up your enquiry at the museum recently on their behalf.

The transcript differs from the gravestone and the year appears to be wrong on the gravestone. I couldnt't find anything about Diana Reynolds Smith on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site through it is there - maybe I was looking at the wrong year. I will try again as we do have a copy of the entry in the museum.

I had a couple of searches for the gravestone and had almost given up when I fortunately stumbled upon it. It is to the left  side facing the end of the church tower between two holly trees - it is a curbed stone carrying the inscription "Diana Reynolds Smith Q.M.A.A.C. who died at Lydd April 14th 1918 aged 22 years " (the transcription states the additional wording - which must be on the other side of the curb "Gathered into Christ's fold". ) Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps was set up in 1917.  I found a Southwold Parish Magazine for 1919 which shows Diana's burial that year but walking back through the churchyard with the museum curator I got her to check with me and we are both sure it says 1918 which is clearly wrong.  The CWGC entry shows that her Army No. was 38703 " and a waitress.  I checked  a press scrap album we have in the museum but can find no other detail about her. I thought there might have been something and how/why she died so young, but couldn't find anything. Do you know anything more about her ?

I did take a photo of the War Memorial which has her name in the list, which I will send to you, and now I know where her grave is located I can plan a return trip. Hopefully within the next few days I will also get the photo of the Sudbury Memorial you requested.

If you do have any info regarding Diana Reynold Smith, which I could forward to the folks at Southwold, I know they would be very grateful.

Thank you for the offer. I have a rather poor photograph of the wall plaque outside of St. Gregory's Church, Sudbury commemorating the airship bombing should you go out that way. I also need a photograph of the headstone of Diana Reynolds SMITH, QMAAC, died 14/4/1919 and buried north of the west end of St. Edmund's church, Southwold. I hope that you can help and the offer re publishing is appreciated and I may come back to you on that one.

Ken, I am glad that her grave has at last been found. I have nothing more about her than has been given save that her file is in the National Archives under WO 398/205. What is good news is that her place of death is given as Lydd, Kent on the grave kerbing. She is likely to have died at home so my next task is to look at the local census which should hopefully reveal exactly where she lived, names of parent and siblings and what they did for a living. I have just prepared a PM to say welcome to the forum and a list of Bucks graves but it appears that you are not yet qualified to receive PMs. As the list is primarily WW2 graves I will not post it here I will wait. In the meantime there are three graves that I require in CLIVEDEN WAR CEMETERY, two are WW I and one is WW2 but it depends if you can gain access to the cemetery, forgive me if you are already aware, but the cemetery is part of the Cliveden Estate owned by the National Trust and one has to telephone the Estate Office - 01628 605069 - to gain access to the cemetery. If you can do this and there is a fee I will gladly reimburse you.

The graves that I require are:-

Hi Tony, thanks for the information about phoning - I wasn't aware that permission is needed. Hopefully, the fee won't be large, and I'm happy to pay because Cliveden's one of those places I've been meaning to visit that's not open when visitors could be taken. So I'll check it out tomorrow and plan accordingly.

Hello CGM, I have some from Tottenham and Wood Green Cemetery but not all. There are other requirements around Tottenham but not graves. These are my wants :-

Lena CROWTHER, QAIMNS. She is buried in T & WG cemetery but seems to be lost as the CWGC has entered her name on the screen wall there. I have a photo of her entry on the screen wall but would love to have her grave even if unmarked. I am hoping that there is a cemetery office there with the records to tie down exactly where she is. She died on the 22nd October 1916 so her interment would have been within a week or so of that. In addition her name is on a memorial tablet on the Chancel wall of the North Middlesex Hospital in memory of five nurses who died at their post during the war. I need a photograph of that, too.

Isabella CRUICKSHANK, QAIMNS. A memorial to three nurses who trained at Colindale Hospital, and subsequently died during the Great War, was unveiled in the vestibule to the nurses home in Colindale Avenue, Hendon on the 2nd July 1920. Isabella Cruickshank is one of the names. Coincidently the three nurses (Isabella Cruickshank, Mary Rodwell and Julia Winchester) died in separate incidents by drowning. The Hendon Infirmary is being redeveloped and the plaque has been taken into the care of the Primary Health Care Trust and is likely to be installed at the hospital at Tottenham. Again a bit of detective work is necessary.

Nurses EVANS and MICHAEL (possibly MEIKLE). The British Journal of Nursing (26/10/18, page 252) shows probationary-nurse Michael from Glasgow and nurse Evans of Carmarthen as having died of influenza contracted whilst nursing at a military hospital. They were buried in the Heroes Corner, Tottenham Cemetery with full military honours. Photographs of their graves required.

Annie Edith Curtis GARNER, QAIMNS. Buried in plot C.5759, T & WG cemetery. I need a photograph of her headstone.

Ada Marion JOHNSON, QAIMNS. Her name is on the screen wall and I have that. But she is buried in Heroes Corner and I need a photograph of her headstone.

I am beginning to wonder if the people buried in Heroes Corner actually had headstones in view of the number that I need.

Hi Tony. I've phoned the estate office and cemetery access seems to be included in access to the grounds. I'll try to go on Thursday, if it's sunny, when the house is open (only £1 extra but popular). The very helpful lady in the office said there are only 46 graves, and they're accessible because shrubbery's cut back. Apparently, outbuildings at the edge of the grounds were offered to the British govt. who turned them down, but the Canadians turned them into the Canadian Red Cross Hospital, which operated as a maternity unit after WW2 until 1978. It's now a large new housing estate. There should be a handbook available, and archive material is kept at Hughenden.

I am new to this forum. I'm writing from Newfoundland. Do you have what you need on Bertha Bartlett the VAD from Brigus, Newfoundland. I think I can get a picture of her and one of her hometown memorial which lists her name along with the men of the town who died. You probably have her gravestone as she was buried in Wandsworth cemetary next to Newfoudland soldiers who died there.

Only one other serving Newfoundland woman died that I know of but she may be outside your framework. She had been serving in England (Ascot Hospital, I believe) and spending her free time going to Wandsworth to visit Newfoundland men who were patients there. In the summer of 1918 she was sent home exhausted and orderedto rest. Like other VADs, however, she went back to work in the fall when Spanish flu hit Newfoundland. She died fighting the epidemic and there is a large single memorial to her in St. john's. As I said, she does not quite fit your project perhaps as she was not exclusively treating servicemen when she died but I am sure that her long war service contributed to her inability to fight the flu and it is interesting that she has her own memorial.

Hello Terry, I still need more re Bertha Bartlett. You are right in that I have a photograph of her grave. But her name is recorded on the memorial roll in Brigus Methodist Church and a photograph of that is required. If you can get a picture of her and also her name on any local memorials over there I would very much appreciate it. You have ommitted to give the name of the "other" female Newfoundlander for me to look up to see if I have her recorded. From what you have written it seems that I should have if she was still in the VAD when she died. Kind regards, Jim
