Tony, You are looking at the wrong Mary (Gladys Maude Mary Wake). I was talking about Mary Elizabeth Oliphant. I believe that I have now found the connection. The S.S. Missanabie, on which Mary was a stewardess, was owned and operated by the Canadian Pacific Ocean Line. She was British but, I suppose, was considered an "honoury" Canadian when it came to memorials.

My error! I was looking at the name at the start of your post, should have read it all properly - I eat humble pie!!!

For anyone who feels that they want to be Sherlock Holmes I am having difficulty with another. The story so far :-

Emily Millicent GOULD, V.A.D. Born Sonning. Member of Berkshire 26 VAD. Died Royal Berkshire Hospital of peritonitis. Date unknown. But for me, more importantly, I would like to know where she is buried. Almost certainly in Berkshire in a private grave. Perhaps an obituary in a local newspaper would help.

Jim
I'll email you about Emily M Gould.

Went to Reading yesterday and found Annie Neish in Reading cemetery and took pictures . I then went to Sonning to see if she was buried in the churchyard but couldn't find her  . Will write to the Parish Secretary to see whether I missed her at Sonning. However if she died in the Royal Berkshire Hospital would have thought she would have been buried in either Sonning or Reading Cemetery which is less than half a mile from the hospital . Will let you know if I find anything . Also send pics of Annie Neish

That's great news. This seems to have been a very peripatetic family if my research proves accurate. Her father was a gardener. He was born in Scotland. Mother in Gloucestershire. Their children born in Cornwall. In 1901 they were in Cheshire. Annie was in an Irish VAD. At her death the family were in Dorset.

Sorry for the strange email I sent you, this morning . Was in a rush and meant although I had the pictures of Annie Neish I went to Sonning in search of Emily Millicent Gould . Although I didn't find her in the churchyard she could be in Reading cemetery as the Royal berks is a short distance from the cemetery . Will keep looking for Emilys burial spot . I hope this now makes sense .

Michelle,
Yes, it came through nicely. I replied to your father thinking that he would have mentioned it to you. It was a really nicely taken photograph and just what I needed. Private headstones are so helpful to me for research as it gives family information that can set you off with Ancestry and find out where they lived, parents occupations, siblings, etc. From the headstone I found that Annies younger brother died in the war, too, serving with the Wiltshire Regiment in Gallipoli. Parents had three children so far as I can tell and two of these taken from them. So sad.

Hello Jim ,

Emily Millicent Gould died on 10th March 1917 aged 29  and is buried in Sonning churchyard . I did go there some weeks ago but didn't find her grave . The parish administrator is going to have another look for a stone this weekend . If she finds it I will take a photo when I next go to Reading .

Jim ,
I dont know if this is of interest but the Mortimer directory 1915 shows the vicar of Mortimer St Marys church as th Rev John Gould and the Mortimer Working Mens club being taken over as a war hospital in 1915 , presumably where Emily nursed . Will let you know if I find a stone

Hello Martin, I have two requirements from there but both will be difficult ones and may be wild goose chases. I say that for both are American. I have found that whilst some Americans were buried in a cemetery near to where they died it was often the case that they were "dug up" and reinterred in one of the large American cemeteries or, indeed shipped home for burial locally. That said, so far as I am aware the following two ladies are buried in Etretat Cemetery.

Rosa Mary RAPP, US Army nurse from Indiana who died of Spanish 'flu on the 4th October 1918.

Annabel S. ROBERTS, US Army nurse from New Jersey who died on the 17th January 1918.

I am just hoping that burials took place in a strict date order so as to find these rather than hunting throughout the cemetery.

Regards, Jim

Thank you for the offer. I have a rather poor photograph of the wall plaque outside of St. Gregory's Church, Sudbury commemorating the airship bombing should you go out that way. I also need a photograph of the headstone of Diana Reynolds SMITH, QMAAC, died 14/4/1919 and buried north of the west end of St. Edmund's church, Southwold. I hope that you can help and the offer re publishing is appreciated and I may come back to you on that one.

Whilst trawling through my manuscript I have found another Suffolk one. Well, one that needs looking for, anyway. She is Daphne Marian Jervis White-Jervis who was a VAD and died on the 16th January 1919 aged around 20. I have been trying to find her last resting place and have been pointed to the family plot at St. Peters, Freston, Suffolk.

Nurse Nora(h) DUGGAN, of Barmouth, Castlerock, near Coleraine, Northern Ireland
Jim,
As a result of the entry which I found in the Londonderry Sentinel, today I visited St. Pauls Church of Ireland, Articlave, Castlerock, and 1st Dunboe Presbyterian, Articlave, Castlerock but could find no trace of Nora or her father Matthew. There are headstones for the name DUGAN but nothing with the names Nora or Matthew.
I spoke to some local people and they suggested Castlerock Presbyterian burying ground near Mussenden Temple just outside Castlerock but I could find no trace of any DUGAN's there. Unless someone can come up with any more ideas, we may have to give up on Nora which will be a shame.

Jim,
The 1911 Census shows a Norah Elson Dugan, 22yrs residing at 4 Bath St, Portrush with her aunt Sarah A Lynn, 50yrs who is a Baptist whereas Norah is shown as Presbyterian.  This is the only Norah Dugan for the County of Antrim.  This may be of help?

Regards

Adrian
