I am researching this Co Armagh man from Glenanne, I believe he was in  C Coy 14th Bn Royal Irish Rifles,I also read some where that he had been training a company of Ulster Volunteers before war was declared,

has any member any information on this soldier?

Many thanks

Joe

His medal card shows he was Pte 8893 1st Gordon Highlanders, CSM 14/8320 14th RI Rifles, and GS/107800 Royal Fusiliers

Went to France 14/9/1914.

His address in 1925 when applying for his clasp, 2 roses and 2 emblems was Glenanne, County Armagh, Ireland.

On the 1911 census, his occupation is Army Reserve (unemployed clerk) - http://www.census.na...Maytone/305471/

(I think that article might have been 1916?)

From Your place and mine web site I came across this detail:-
Colin Lowry - Aug '06
I found your information very interesting this was a very brave man, my grandfather Joseph Lowry served in the Gordon Hylanders, apparently he was fighting in france his rank was sergeant and he was injured during a battle and had to leave he received an award for gallantry and distinguished service in the field 14 Jan 1914. When his wounds healed he joined the14th batt royal Irish Rifles as a csm information has been passed down by family members that he was with private Mc Fadzean at the Somme. My grandfather was awarded the distinguished service medal and the military cross the 27th of July 1916. This is all the information that I know, if possible may be you can tell me where I could access your photograph to see if I could identify him. Could you please also inform me if it is possible to find out what my grandfather did to receive such honors?
thank you.

Looking more details on this soldier, I have been told there is a photo on the internet some where?
many thanks
Joe

"1st July 1916 ... Any details what the Bn was doing"

Going over the Top !!

I will ask David Truesdale if there is any mention of Lowry in MacRobert Diary (soon to be published as "Young Citizen, Old Soldier).

I have also notified a guy who I think has had access to the War Diary for the 14th Battalion, RIRifles.
