There's a service record for a Nellie Williamson who served in the QAIMNSR:

Also a medal card for a Nellie Williamson who served as a VAD:

Nellie Williamson, VAD, is on FMP (courtesy of Sue Light). This is a pay-as-you-go website if you don't subscribe. It only specifically mentions overseas service but it is not a complete service record. There is also an address.

Hello seaJane. Thank you very much for looking. I do think it is Norwich though.
I think am totally guessing that Joseph was treated at Thorpe and then transferred to the Red Cross Hospital for convalescence.

I think officially Norfolk War Hospital, Thorpe, Norwich, which had nearly 2000 beds in former asylum premises.  As was usual with military hospitals, as soon as men were well enough they were transferred out to a smaller auxiliary hospital, but still under the control of the central hospital they had come from.  Loddon V.A.D. Hospital was a 20-bedded auxiliary hospital in premises that before the war had been used as a Sunday School.

Just to confirm that the file at TNA for Nellie Williamson is not relevant.  I was at Kew yesterday, so checked it, but it's for a married woman, formerly Madden, who returned to nursing during the war as her husband was a doctor serving with the RAMC - Major George Scott Williamson (and what an interesting war he had, though that's another story!).

Thanks Sue
That clears that up.
