Hi.
Trying to help a friend of mine who is presenting a talk to his local village society, this year, the focus is his local war memorial.
As far as he can ascertain, the vessel was torpedoed and sunk by U27 off Corsewall Point, Galloway, Ireland, with the loss of 197 people.
Any information on the submarine and details of the sinking would be most helpful.

Can`t add much. U-boat Capt Wegener. Bayano on way to Liverpool from Clyde to coal. Sank in under 3 minutes, most men asleep below. 4 officers and 22 men saved, 14+181 lost.

Bayano was a Elders & Fyffes ship launched in 1913 of 5934 grt.

Interestingly, I just ordered a copy several micorfilms of U-boat war diaries (KTBs) from the U.S. National Archives. These include U 27's KTB. If your interested, I can get see you the attack is described in the war diary -- don't expect the description to be more than a  few short paragraphs as KTBs are pretty much always terse.

A few jumbled snippets from a collection of miscellaneous notes I have being making whilst researching a marine (Pte George Henry Absalom, RMLI) killed on the Bayano 11/3/15 (sources not known but all found on the internet). The Bayano was a merchant ship commissioned by the Admiralty as an Armed Merchant Cruiser (AMC) on 21/12/14. She served with 10th Cruiser Squadron.

At the beginning of World War I British passenger liners were requisitioned by the Royal Navy for conversion to armed merchant cruisers in part to form the 10th Cruiser Squadron and also to relieve the strain on the regular cruisers by undertaking lone patrols, and later, convoy escort duties.

The Royal Navy was short of cruisers and attempted to make up the deficiency by attaching a few guns and White Ensigns to selected liners. The resulting ships were classified as armed merchant cruisers and used mainly as escorts. They were vulnerable ships, being high-sided, unarmoured, and not highly compartmented.

Regarding the fate of the U27 19/8/15:

(1) On August 19, in the Irish Sea, a German submarine, the U-24, sank an unarmed British liner, the Arabic, killing forty-four passengers and two U.S. citizens. Later that day, a surfaced German submarine, the U-27, shelled a cargo ship, the Nicosian, carrying mules from New Orleans to England. An armed British merchant ship, the Baralong, flying the U.S. flag, approached the submarine. Crewmen aboard the Baralong lowered the U.S. flag and raised the British flag. British marines began firing upon the Germans. Twelve submarine crewmen jumped into the sea, and the marines fired upon them, killing six. The other six fled to the Nicosian and took refuge in its engine room. The marines found them and killed all six. Germany's ambassador to Washington protested the British use of the American flag and the murder of German sailors. But it was the killing of the two Americans who had been aboard the Arabic that aroused Americans and concerned President Wilson.

(2) Lieut Godfrey Herbert RN, enraged about Germans in general and U-boat warfare in particular, ordered that all German survivors, among them the commander of U27, should be executed on the spot. Although the British Admiralty tried to keep this event as a secret, news spread out to Germany and the infamous "Baralong" incident - a war crime which was never prosecuted - had its share in promoting cruelty at sea.

(3) The Baralong Incident was a contoversial event of the First World War, that was never entirely resolved. Whether it was actually a unprosecuted war crime, or largely fabricated from a less notable violation, or whether any violation even occured at all, will not be known do to a lack of records. The story was used by German Navy to justify increased cruelty at sea during World War I and especially in World War II under Nazi Germany. There was even a Kriegsmarine submarine flotilla formed on June 25, 1938, named "Wegener" in memory of this incident.

I wil pass along the information when the KTBs get to me. The NARA is a bit unpredictable in their delivery times. You can get your order in a week -- or six weeks.

I can give you a few details for now though: U 27 sailed on Feb. 25 and returned home on March 17. Routing was via the north of Scotland both ways. The other ship U 27 on this patrol was the steamer Hartdale on March 13th. Also, it's likely that U 27  was not yet fitted with deck gun(s) when she sank Bayano, though hopefully her KTB would shed more light on that. (She certain was fitted with one or two deck guns before being sunk.)

If you ever take the Irish Ferry from Stranraer you round Carswell Point on the way to Belfast.

Weather observation, taken a few hours earlier: W2, S2, generally clear with some patches of drizzle/fine rain

0500 (German time), March 11 1915: "Grosser abgeblendeter Handelsdampfer = erst für Kriegsschiff gehalten = vom inneren Fjord her in Sicht. Angriff gefahren. Bugtorpedo trifft Dampfer im vorderen Drittel. Schussweite 2-300m, Grösse des dampfers etwa 8000t, abgeblendet, Nationalität unbekannt. Dampfer sinkt mit Bug horan in etwa 10 Minuten. Drei Boote mit Fackelfeuer zu Wasser."

The HMS Bayano was one quarter of the affectionately nicknamed the Banana Fleet or just "The bananas" it was going to have a race with one of the other sister ships back to patrol, but the ballast never turned up in time so they never raced

The HMS Bayano had been coaling in Glasgow  left port by herself, and encountered a submarine at the mouth of the Clyde and was torpedoed and sunk on 11th March.

My grandfather, James Kanavan, went down on the Bayano. He joined the Navy in about 1885 as a blacksmith. He was recalled to the service in July 1914 after retiring in about 1910. His wife had died in childbirth in 1913 and when he died he left 5 orphans, the oldest of whom was 11. It was hard for these children, but they were helped by the sister of Captain John Kelly (later Admiral Sir John  Kelly). I would be most interested in seeing your memorabilia.

I need help in tracing a known relative of ERA Edward H. Harris, a crew member of the Bayano.   A local dealer in bric-a-brac has in his possession a very large and framed photograph of this man, from where it was obtained he knows not.  The business is closing at the end of this month, when the photo will probably be scrapped.   I would very much like to see this photo returned to a relative.  All my efforts so far have been negative.   Keith of Lyndhurst Hants. 02380283732
