I think the 1/8th Hants were in Palestine. If you have found the date of his death have you the place he's buried also ? My CWGC access is showing nil result however I spell the name. is it the hyphenated Trevor-Roper (Hugh) that we know of  from broadcasting a few years back ?

i failed to pick up off the cwgc listing that he was with the 14th Hants. i will put a posting on the units& formations to see where and what he may have been doing

The London Gazette has him promoted to Acting Major (12/3/1917) 2nd in command of a Battalion. The 14th maybe?

Hi Gareth

His medal index card shows he did belong to the 8th Hants, who were in Palestine at the time.

He must have been attached to the 14th, who I think were with the Irish Division as pioneers, perhaps he had been wounded or sick, and returned to the UK, and then on to the 14th.

Medal Index card attached I hope.

Gareth

He would have been wounded in the battle of Pilckem Ridge. The 14th Hants were part of 116 Brigade of 39 Division of XVIII Corps of the 2nd Army, which on the evening of 31 July 1917,prior to this Battle commencing, was in the front line just in front of and to the west of St Julien at their southern end,and a few hundred yards SSW of Langemarck at their northern end.
His burial place was served by an Advanced Dressing Station at Duhallow, a couple of kms north of Ypres. This was a GRIM period with tens of thousands of casualties.

You are well aware that the Trevor-Ropers from Plas Teg,  were an historic and powerful local family. I've never worked out the proper address- is it nearer Caergwrle (your stomping ground) or Pontblyddyn? As an off topic comment to those who do not know of Plas Teg - Plas Teg is a large 17th century mansion which is reputed to be the most haunted house in Wales. It's been subject to one of those Most Haunted programmes. I wonder if Capt Trevor-Roper made an appearance!

He gets a couple of mentions in the regimental history

The first has him as acting second in command of the 14th Battalion with the rank of Captain but mentions that he was originally with the 8th Battalion. That is on the 1st of October 1916.

The second has him wounded, confirming sontonmate's posting, on July 31st 1917 by which time he was a Major

I'm afraid not. As with most of the histories they give an account of the action and then a list of the killed wounded or missing officers by name and the numbers of other ranks in each category. Occasionally you get a specific mention of a wounding if it was witnessed and recorded but not on this occasion
