"Deathwatch"... atmospheric, but not too good of a WW1-movie in my opinion.

No. The two stills are from 2 different films as I said. Made 16 years apart but using the same location! (and I think the same tank).

Gwyn

The first is from the December 1943 film 'Victory' and was shot in Dorset. Another still shows the tank approaching a pill box the garrison of which appear to be exhibiting behaviors that would make Corporal Jones appear the model of calmness. During WW2 a number of books and films were based around the Napoleonic wars and in essence put out the message 'we saw off Napoleon and we'll see off Hitler too' I suspect that this did the same with the Kaiser substituting for Boney.

The second is from a 1927 film, likewise shot in Dorset. I'm not certain of the title but suspect it was simply 'The tank'

Source Life magazine archives.

There is a photo from 1918 showing a mk V being painted in the same camo scheme and I suspect it became the standard film tank. If it was still running in 1943 it would seem to have escaped the main scrap purge that took off the remaining presentation tanks (bar 3) and a large part of the Tank museum's holdings. I wonder when it succumbed - be nice to think that under a tarpaulin at Shepperton or Ealing .... no a mere pipe dream.
