Posted on behalf of a friend of a friend on another forum. (Sounds dodgey I know but it's true Guvnor -Honest!)

AWM Collection Record: J06145

ID Number:
J06145 Physical description: Black & white Summary: THE TURKISH NAVAL GUN ON MOUNT CARMEL CAPTURED BY THE MYSORE LANCERS. (DONATED BY GENERAL SIR HARRY CHAUVEL.) Copyright: Copyright expired - public domain Copyright holder: Copyright Expired Related subject: Naval guns Related unit: Turkish Navy Related place: Ottoman Empire: North Palestine, Tel Aviv Haifa Area, Haifa Related conflict: First World War, 1914-1918

Today I received an email from a friend in Israel.
He explained that he attempted to join a WW1 forum but could not log on for some reason or other.

He has asked me if I could post this picture of a large calibre gun with two Australian officers standing nearby.

He would would like to establish the following:

1. When taken.
2. Where taken.
3. Details of the officers.
4. There is a second photograph of a German gun at Mount Carmel. Is
this gun the same one?

I am informed that there was 17 naval guns in the Haifa area.

The other picture:

As previously mentioned any help no matter how small is gratefully appreciated smile.gif

Regards
Andy

Some more additional info ref the above:

QUOTE
I asked Michael if he knew anything else about the history of the canons and this reply came today.

the facts are.
these guns were up on mount Carmel 156 meters above sea level.

one was right near the DAN CARMEL HOTEL, as a child I swa the foundation and bolts of the old gun.

I do not know were the second gun was set up.

The gun caused trrouble to the approaching British and Indian forces in Sep 1918. 18 were killed. they are buiried in the WW1 graveyard in Haifa.

the picture you sent me is from the gun near the hotel. the small trees are there to this day.

there is great interest out here, as we know that British officers , and Australian officers took photoes to remember from this sit up on the mountain near the big gun.

it was a Naval gun, made in Germany, and the turkes pulled it up the mountail. must have been hell to do that..

I shall receive 3 more air photoes in 2 weeks. these pic were taken by Germen 3 winnged planes above Haifa in 1915- during the war time. the big gun should show on them.

Regards
Tom

Andy,

I'm very pleased to see the Australian photograph of the Turkish naval gun
This is new to me, but I have seen the other (1920) picture before
see http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...showtopic=83044

I may be wrong, but my impression is that the two photographs show the same gun
and that it was positioned near ''Wilhelm's obelisk''
(see post #4 here http://1914-1918.inv....howtopic=66037)

I shall certainly be very interested to learn more on this from your friend in Haifa

regards
Michael
