After all the excellent re-organization of the site I was wondering (and have done for a while) if there should be a separate sub-forum for archaeology? At the moment most of this goes on the 'Battlefields in danger' section but a lot of archaeology is done in the context of reserach projects and is therefore, technically, not in danger as are things like google trench spotting etc.

Or has this been raised before??

Any thoughts from the pals?

I see that quite a few people have viewed this topic. I had wondered if it would provoke a heated debate, but perhaps there is a lack of courage to be the first to repond to this possibly contentious issue?

Perhaps we need to debate the topic in a variety of ways which needs to include everything from illegal digging, finds as a result of construction work and farming, and those who pick up the random found items. I think that a lot of these topics have been introduced elsewhere, but perhaps there is indeed a need to consider a structured sub-forum.

I have seen a link from european websites on the WFA site, to a French collector's site with a lot of relic items. Maybe the sub-forum can include the finds which lead to human stories, finds of human remains, and a general debate on the merits of uncovering the underground story of the development of warfare from 1914-18 on all fronts.

While a lot of crossover may occur with many topics on other threads on the forum, I do see a place for an archaeological debate. After all we do see a lot of relic items in museums, and I see no objection to that. I want to clarify that I am not in favour of the plundering of sensitive sites, but at the same time, I am able to say that I have picked up surface finds as so many other members do.

Is there anyone out there with their own contributions to this topic?

I will follow this closely.

However, to answer the original question, no it has not been suggested or considered to my recollection.

The development of some sub-forums has not been recieved kindly by all, though visitor stats provide some evidence that the move has been successful in terms of raising views and also of course many people have liked the move.

There are no immediate plans for further reorganisation though if the demand is there the team will consider it.

I echo Mick's comments above.

I would welcome such a forum. However while I have a strong interest in Archaeology and studied and passed at AS Level I was unable to persue it beyond that. My knowledge is therefore only a tiny percentage of that of the professionals/time served, which because of the complexities of Archaeology such a forum would need. I don't know how many Archaelogists the forum has and given that Archaeology is very time intensive would they be able to spare enough time anyway. Interesting to see if anything developes beyond this thread.

Dear all,
there are a few of us archaeologists on here - myself and Martin Brown for a start! I know that other members of No-Man's-Land are also on the forum and can offer their archaeological knowledge when needed, whichever part of the forum this resides in.

I think there could be a place for this on the forum. You do not have to be an archaeologist to have an interest in battlefield archaeology. I for one would be interested.

I do worry that we have so many sub-forums that it becomes more difficult to know where to out/find stuff.

Martin, that of course is one of the other things that needs to be considered.

I find sub-topics more useful by scrolling through 'Todays active topics' or 'View new posts'
I find it more difficult to find the right topic to post under. I would think the more topics the better although I am sure it would be a nightmare to have too many.
