Cecil Thomas HILLS was born in Suffolk, England, and had migrated to Australia where he obtained employment as a Station Hand. On 11 February 1915, he enlisted for service in the Australian Imperial Force and was appointed to the 12th Regiment, Australian Light Horse. While serving at Gallipoli with the 7th Regiment, Australian Light Horse, he was wounded in the thigh and hand and evacuated to Malta for medical treatment.

Upon recovery, he returned to Egypt and rejoined his original unit for further service in Palestine where, on 17 October 1917, he was promoted to Lance Corporal. On 31 October 1917, the 12th Regiment participated in the famous charge against the Turkish defences of Beersheba. During this action, Lance Corporal HILLS was fatally wounded in the thigh and pelvis and died a few days later, on 3rd November 1917, at the 35th Casualty Clearing Station at El Imara. He was buried at Beersheva Military Cemetery, Plot D, Grave 14.

Saluting his service - and commemorating his sacrifice.

Regards

Wayne

Here are two photos of Lance Corporal HILLS' grave markers. One is a period photo, depicting the original wooden cross, which was sent to the family; the other is a recent photo very kindly provided by Forum Member michaeldr.
