For want of nothing better to do, I have found details of two men who appear on the Alford War Memorial Scroll (see photo wants site) as their information is/was very sketchy, neither of these men appear on the CWGC nor SDGW, it may be a task for any Lincolnshire pals on the Forum to find where these men are buried and bring them "in from the cold" I wish I lived in the area I would do it like a shot. The two men are JOHN THOMAS SIMPSON 235101 4th Worcs died 24-6-1919 death registered Spilsby Lincs (pension papers on Ancestry) and JESSE BURKITT 84880 56 P COY RDC died 27-5-1919 Alford Lincs death also registered Spilsby ( papers also on Ancestry). Anybody up for the challenge ? Ralph.

The key for what I presume are post-discharge cases is to link cause of death to service. If a link can be made then they are entitled to CWGC commemoration. The death certificates are going to be needed.

I've asked a moderator to shift the thread to the "possible non-comms" sub-forum. Hope that's OK, Ralph.

John

Cheers John, one of them suffered gsw to his left buttock, side and hip and spent 7 months in hospital I think he more than likely died as a result of this injury, the second died of TB brought on by being gassed in February 1918 according to the write up in his papers. Ralph.

I have several men from Sleaford, Lincs, all post discharge deaths. The trouble is the cost and with no substantial interest in Lincolnshire i'd much rather purchase a Shropshire death cert.

Chris. Well done, any chance he has a headstone that can be photographed for the CWGC ? I will send for the death certs asap. Have already downloaded the service papers to help in this cause. Ralph.

If there's a grave reference, then usually they will, Ralph.

I think if its an unmarked plot with a number of different (non family) burials I think they are more likely to put up a "buried in this cemetery" stone nearby - so it doesnt give the impression that its just him. Maybe wrong.

We have one in a local churchyard like that. The grave is in there somewhere but all the stones were buried under soil when it was turned into a nature reserve. The CWGC stone is at the side of the church and it's a good compromise solution:
