I'm looking for information on the role of this regiment in WW1. Were they sent to any theatre of the war or did they remain to guard the colonies?

I haven't been able to find out any more than that the HKSRA and RGA had four companies. Out of the four, two were composed of Mohammedans (Muslims) from Northern India, one of Sikhs, and one of mixed castes, Portuguese and Chinamen.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that they were protecting the Suez Canal around Ismailia from a Turkish advance early on in the war, but I'm probably mistaking that for someone else.

HK&SRGA Mountain Battery were part of the Imperial Camel Corps Brigade which began forming in Egypt in November 1915. Served in the Western Desert, Sinai and Palestine. The mountain battery had 6 x 10-pdr to Feb 1917 then 6 x 2.75in. 210 all ranks.

I know of at least one officer, 2nd Lt B F Chapman, a Sandbach schoolboy, killed at Second Battle of Gaza.

The HK&S batty was a mountain unit with donkies but on its attachment to the Camel Brigade in 1916 it handed its Donk's for Camels.

The Btty was a mixed unit with Sikhs and other Indian soldiers.

I have a nominal roll, I have made up which is not very good but does show the mixed nature of the men.

The War dairy is availible also. And shows its movements around Egypt and Palestine during the war both before and after the Camel Brigade.

Thank you both for that information. Glad to hear that the war diary is available. I'm also collating a nominal list from the MIC's online, but recognising that it has its limitations.

Mat,

I was trying to build up a nominal roll on this unit for a book I am working on of the Imperial Camel Corps.

Names of soldiers for this unit are hard to find for me in Australia and purhaps we can compare notes on the nominal roll as I would like to include all the men possible that served. I have about one hundred names.

If you can not find the War Diary let me know and I'll get a copy for you.

Be aware the War Diary is in part badly written with small writting.

What is the MIC and where on line.

Steven,

MICS are Medal Index Cards. There are many threads on this forum that describe exactly what they are.

The PRO in Kew has recently started a project to digitize all the cards so in theory if you are willing to pay you can find an image of any surviving card. Of course they aren't completely accurate with missing entitlements, mistypes and names round the wrong way.
At present there are about 500 HKSRGA names, with much of the alphabet still to do. While it isn't feasible to download images of entire units, (at 3.50 Br pounds a throw-although you do get 6 cards which may not all be relevant) the index does give rank changes, regt numbers and any other service. So far I've transcribed about 250 names, so there's a long way to go.
Ideally we should look up the HKSRGA medal rolls to get the accurate roll, but as that isn't digitized yet, the MICs have to do.

To access them go to the Public Record Office site and in the Documents Online section look for First World War records online. I'd give you a direct link but the luddite part of me hasn't got a handle on that yet.

I think it's going to take quite a while for me to transcribe them, as I have many other projects up in the air, but I have no problem sharing the info when it's done.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Mate,

I should have picked that up before I spoke.

I have gone threw that sourse as I have many names for the 2nd British Bn Camel Corps from it.

Yes your right its limited in its info but its the best we have for now.

I surpose any nominal roll, we make, is only a starting point for those we pass on to the future. They may have more luck but its a sart we never had.

An old thread, perhaps, but . . .

I host a MM (0ne of the VERY few MMs to Indians) to H.K.S.B. 1390 NAIK TIKA KHAN. H.K-S.BN:R.G.A. (LG 25 April 1918.

Unusually for an Indian, he has a MIC card at Kew.

With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 the Hong Kong and Singapore Battalion, Royal Garrison Artillery, was employed on coastal defence duties at Hong Kong, Singapore and Mauritius. In 1915 No. 1 Company was formed into a 6-gun Mountain Battery and equipped with 10-pounder guns and then embarked for Egypt where it served with the Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade. After a tour of duty in the Suez Canal defences, the Battery took part in the western desert campaign. In early 1916 the Battery was stationed at Abassia where it was re-equipped with camel instead of mule transport and then attached to the Imperial Camel Corps. It then saw service in Palestine where it took part in the battles of Maghdada and Rafah. In January 1917 it was again re-equipped, this time exchanging its 10-pounder mountain guns for 2.75-inch guns. The Battery then took part in the three battles of Gaza, the action at Nebi Samil, the capture of Jerusalem and the attacks on Ammaw, Es Salt, Abu Tehnib and Megiddo.

Also have a number of solo medals to them (broken groups sad.gif ):

BWM:

1598 [?] A-NAICK BHAN SINGH. H.K.S.R.G.A.

Victory:

1439 GNR. TEJAH SINGH H.K.S.R.G.A.

And some others, I think. cool.gif

H.K.S.R.G.A. 1703 GNR. NADU KHAN. star -

To add to Ed's excellent summary of the Battery's Great War experience here are three pages from Lucas' "The Empire at War".

Martin Farndale's "The Forgotten Fronts" contains maps and descriptions of the actions.

Mates,

Thanks also for the details.

I;ll check these new men as additions are welcome.

Bushfighter

I notice that piece mentioned three (3) Indian Army officers killed at 2nd Gaza with the Battery, does any one know which ones they were?

The only officer I know killed at 2nd Gaza is Ben Chapman Lt RGA, but I am unsure about his Indian Army conections other then being with the HK&SMB?

Steve

I would assume that Ben Chapman is the British officer KIA.

If you have (or if any other forum member has) made a database of casualties in that campaign then a search in the date period of 2nd Ghaza should throw out the three Indian officers also KIA.
