George was the eldest son of George Salkeld and Mary (nee Sutherland) Webster of ‘Beach Mount’, Cambridge Road, Waterloo, Liverpool. His father was, at the turn of the century, a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve.
George enlisted in the Royal Engineers, serving as a Lance Corporal, later gaining his commission in the 3rd Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment, later transferring to the Royal Flying Corps.
Hewas wounded twice in his service and had only just returned to duty when killed flying over the area of Brie. He was 20 years of age.
George is buried in Brie British Cemetery in Grave II.G.5.
