Thanks for the posts guys......I'm travelling with the 19th London OCA on Saturday morning and whilst I'm helping with the tour I've no idea what we are doing!

I do know we are staying in Arras and there is also a bus load from the London Scottish coming over.....perhaps we will see each other at some point......

Chalres Fair is OC the tour and to me Sunday sounds like a good idea to come on the walk......

For anyone reading this I hope to bring a few copies of MuG with me...you never know......

Salut Gilles

You may remember we met on the 90th Anniversary.  I'm bringing 30 people with the 19th London Regt Old Comrades Association (St Pancras).  Niall is one of our party.

On the afternoon of the Saturday 25th we will be wreathlaying at the Loos Memorial (after visits to Le Touret Mem and Guards Cemetery)

On the Sunday we are planning to do the Loss Museum and exhibtion in the church.  I wanted to check that the visit to the Double Crassier is open.  I remember that in 2005 you couriered us up to the top in a minibus.  Will that happen again this year?  (I see from your post above that the Crassier is open, but I assume that we cannot take a bus up there.)  If so, at what time should we report to the museum?

Do you expect many people over the weekend?  We are hoping to have lunch/beer in the cafes of Loos on Sunday.

Thanks for your advice.  A bientot

Charles

Wish I could be there too.

My Granfather was there 95 years ago with the 6th battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers. On the 23rd Sept. 95 years ago the 6th KOSB were in reserve trenches at Annequin & moved up to the frontline trenches on the 24th. The battalion were ordered to assault the German trenches at Mad Point & S.E. of Madagascar Trenches at 06.30 on the 25th which was also a Saturday too.

From my reckoning the battallion was composed 894 men & OR, 20 officers took part in the attack. The war diary  entry for the 25th Sept. 1915  states 12 officers were killed & 8 wounded, 189 men were killed, 266 were wounded & 169 were missing; 6 were gassed.

From further research it would seem 205 were killed while 3 DOW, 287 were wounded.

As I say, I wish I was there too,

Aftermath of Loos?
Dated 27th September 1915. this picture shows Germans escorting a column of prisoners (Scots and French for the most part it appears) through Lille en route to prison camps.

think  we saw you too up there around 9.45 on Sunday morning as we headed up to Vermelles and Auchy.

By the way, did you see what looked like a piece of a memorial plaque to Col Egerton of the Coldstreams that the Loos museum has obtained, and if so what did you think of it?

cheers Martin B

I was with our Birmingham WFA group at the Loos Museum with Gilles on Saturday afternoon. He pointed out three recent finds - a Colt revolver, a gas alarm bell and the Egerton plaque. I was gobsmacked because I knew quite a bit about Egerton. I gave Gilles a photo of him and his De Ruvigny entry. He was originally Coldstream but became the first CO of the Uni of London OTC. He returned to command 1/Coldstream when the war broke out. I guided the London Uni OTC anniversary tour in April 2009 and our first stop was Egerton's headstone in Vermelles British. Next to his grave was his adjutant. They were both killed on September 29 1915 when a shell collapsed their Bn HQ dugout. See pics
