21 January 1918

+ Oblt. Schmidt Rudolf an observer and CO Bosta 14 was KIA at Gent and according to VDK die the 22nd January 1918 (D) He probably died in the crash of his plane. Before he flew he was with Infanterie Regiment 149.

25 January 1918

Three planes, probably from RFA 501 and Gotha’s from Bogohl III had to return from the first bombflight on England due to heavy fog.

28 January 1918

Attack of probably three giants and ten Gotha’s

According to British sources, disaster struck in a very heavy way. One of the heavy bombs did hit Mss. Oldham’s painting works at Long Acre. As this happened at night, nothing special, had it not been that many people in the area had taken cover in the improvised shelter of the building. The building collapsed killing 37 and injuring 89 others., This was about half the total of casualties in this raid.

This Gotha had been seen east of London by two pilots of 44 Squadron at Hainault farm,
B2402 Sopwith Camel 44 HDS, Capt GH Hackwill
B3827 Sopwith Camel 44 HDS, Lt CC Banks combat with Gotha GV during 10 minutes night 28 on 29th, shot down near Frunds Farm Wickford 10.10 PM
both pilots awarded MC for this victory
Gotha V 398/16 seems to have been captured
So it can only be this crew :

+ Unteroff. Karl Ziegler, Essex, ° 22/10/1898 Stuttgart, gunner Kasta 14, KIA Essex
+ Lt. von Thomsen Friedrich observer Bosta 14 was KIA at Essex (D), originally with Feld Artillerie Regiment 46
+ Unteroff. Walter Heiden, pilot, Kasta 14, KIA Essex

Circumstances of loss unknown, but in crash at Desteldonk :

+ Lt. Birkenstock Hellmuth, pilot of Bosta 16 is KIA at Desteldonk near Gent (D)
+ Lt.d.R. Döge Paul of Bosta 15, an observer is KIA at Gent (D)
+ Vizefeldwebel Petzke Georg pilot Bosta 16 was KIA at Desteldonk near Gent (D)

One bomber fouled the balloon apron in the Chingford district.

There is discussion about the end of Bristol F2b C4638 of 39 HD Sqdn. Normally it is accepted that the crew of Eschenderlein/Radke/Genth shot down the plane of 2Nd Lt JG Goodyear and 1AM WT Merchant, who was wounded after the were forced to land due to the fact that their fuel tank had been shot up. However some sources also say that they were the victim of Staaken RIV 12/15, in fact British sources from the pilots say this. It is possible that they did not want to face the fact that they had been shot down by a Gotha crew...

29 January 1918

According to the same British sources, two giants made it to London, and one was attacked from the air and was forced to return home near Tottenham, dropping it’s bombs near Wansted, causing no casualties and little material damage. The second one was attacked by Captain A. Dennis from 37 Squadron, stationed at Goldhanger, flying a BE12. However without result and the plane turned at Hertford, went for Brentford and dropped it’s bombs on Richmond Old Deer park, on Brentford, Kew Bridge road and the Chiswick district. It left England near Hythe.
The third plane fled for the AA guns at Billericay and it is unknown where it dropped it’s bombs. That night 10 people got killed and the same number injured. Material damage : as good as none.

+ Unteroff. Heiden Walter a pilot of Bosta 14 was KIA over England (D)
+ Lt.d.R. Ludwig Franz an observer from Bosta 14 was KIA at Mariakerke near Gent (D) in a crash, he originally was with Reserve Infanterie Regiment 210

30 January 1918

- Lt.d.R. Braun Immanuel is injured in a crash. He was active as an observer in Bosta 13 and was hospitalised until the 21st February 1918.

16 February 1918

Again three giants were seen over England, but only one made it till London. The first bombs came down in Woolwich and one bomb dit hit the Roayl Hospital at Chelsea. In Woolwich sever were killed and two injured, at Chelsea, it came down on a house at the east end of the hospital and seems to have killed an officer of the Household company, his wife, her sister, and three children. Two other children of the family were rescued out of the debris. The rest of the bombs were dropped at Beckenham, coming down on some allotments and a park. The second plane was seen in the area of the Isle of Dogs, where it had to turn back because of heavy AA fire. It probably dropped it’s bombs over the sea. The third one was seen at Cliffe near Dover, where it’s bombs caused very little damage.

+ Sgt. Niemeyer Emil a pilot from Bosta 16 was killed in a crash at Oostakker (D)
+ Lt. Freiherr von Schlieben Joachim from Bosta 14 was killed in a crash at Landegem (D)

17 February 1918

This time only one giant was seen over London and five of its bombs seem to have hit the Midland Grand Hotel near Saint Pancras station, killing 20 and wounding 22 others.
The other bombs came down in the south-eastern quarters of London killing one more person and injuring ten more others.

+ Oblt. Graf von Adelmann und zu Adelmannsfelden Wilhelm Siegfried, CO of Bosta 14 was killed in a crash, no details known at Landegem (D)
+ Vizefeldwebel Fels August, pilot with Bosta 14 also killed in an accident at Landegem (D)
+ Lt.d.R. Jackson Wilhelm observer with Bosta 14 was killed in a crash at Landegem (D)
+ Lt. Graf von Schwerin Hans-Heinrich an observer from Bosta 16 was killed in a crash at Oostakker (D) some sources say this happened the day before and he died of wounds on the 17th

1 March 1918

+ Unteroffizier Bäcker Paul an observer of Bosta 16 is KIA at Gontrode (D)

8 March 1918

In the night of the 7th on the 8th six giants set off in a very bright night because of the Aurora Borealis, although there was no moonlight.
Three of the planes reached London killing 23 and injuring 39. The biggest damage in this raid were caused by a bomb at Warrington Crescent, Paddington, killing 12 and injuring 23 but also damaging 400 houses, of which 20 were seriously damaged ! Three bombs came down at Saint John’s Wood and killed 8, wounding 2.
Another plane went to Hertford and one turned back at Billericay.

+ Unteroff. Hohm Paul pilot of Bosta 14 was killed in a crash at Mariakerke near Gent (D)

On British side it seems that two planes were chasing Staaken RVI 27/16, a BE12 C3208 from 37 HD Sqdn, with pilot Capt. AB Kynoch and a SE5a from 61 HD Sqdn B679 with Capt. HC Stround on board and that during this action they collided with eachother killing both captains.

19 May 1918

This would become a very black day for the Bogohl III unit, and a very large number of planes didn’t make it back or crashed at landing. The results of the raid were not mentionable in comparison with the losses suffered. In London 48 people were killed and 172 injured, and elsewhere 1 killed and 5 injured.
But not even 50 % of the planes would make it back. This are the losses and claims :

D6423 Sopwith Camel 112 HDS, Maj CJQ Brand SA
attacked Gotha G IV near Faversham around 11.30 PM who was in flames ?
British pilot also wounded, scorched by flames in face and moustache
?
A report says he shot one engine out of action, kept firing, plane bursted into flames, flames scorched his face and it fell between Harty and Sheerness
Other sources say it was attacked around 22.36 hours British time ? and went down near Isle of Sheppey and that the Gotha GIV was captured.

C4636 Bristol F2b 39 HDS, Lt AJ Arkell, 1AM ATC Stagg
attacked Gotha G IV and shot down near Roman Road, East Ham at 12.20 AM on the 20th May
British plane took damage also, heavily shot up
The saw it just after midnight and first attacked it from down behind and when the Gotha started to dive and fire back they went closer and firing two drums to it. Afterwards they hit the starboard engine which v-caught fire and that was the end of the Gotha.
All crew were killed, two jumped out from the blazing machine during it’s fall
The plane was noted as captured so it must have crashed on British soil.
This was the crew :

+ Lt. Sapkowick Paul, observer from Bosta 18 was KIA at 20 May, not found in von Eberhardt list (D)
+ Gefr Wilhelm Schulte, Ham, ° 21/10/1897 Dortmund, gunner Bosta 18, KIA 20 May
+ Vizefeldwebel Hans Thiedke, pilot, Bosta 18 KIA 20 May 1918
Schulte was the one who remained in the plane when it crashed.

C851 Bristol F2b 141 HDS, Lt EE Turner, Lt HB Barwise
attacked Gotha G IV and shot down between Frinsted and Harrietsham at 12.30 AM on the 20th May
British plane also had to land at Detling it seems
German plane crashed near Harrietsham, had intention to land on aerodrome overthere, pilot and gunner were killed, third occupant had broken arm. Plane fired distress signals before crashing.

More on this :
The aircraft is believed to have been Gotha GV 979 / 16 from BG 3/17.* The crew was Vfw Albrecht Sachtler, pilot, Lieutenant* Joachim Flathow, observer, and gunner Uffz Hermann Tasche.* The pilot and observer died but the gunner survived and became a prisoner of war.** Their machine had large white letters "FST" on the fuselage, standing for "Flatlow/Sachtler/Tasche," which can be seen in the photo below of the wreckage.** Apparently, the observer, Lieutenant Flatlow, was in charge.**
+ Vizefeldw Albrecht Sachtler, Frinsted, °30/12/1896 Alexisbad, Bosta 17 ?
+ Vizefeldwebel Sachtler Albrecht pilot from Bosta 17 was killed in crash 20 May at Frinstead (D)
- Unteroff. Tasche Hermann gunner Bosta 17 was taken POW 19 May (D)

The aircraft crashed between Frinsted and Harrietsham at 00.45 am on the night of 19-20 May, 1918.**
The victory was shared between 143 squadron flying the SE5a and 141 squadron flying the Bristol Fighter.** It was first attacked by Major Frederick Sowrey, the commanding officer of No. 143 but he could not press home his attack as both of his guns jammed. *The Gotha was then attacked by two SE5a’s from 141 squadron, Lt Edward Eric Turner and Lt Henry Balfour Barwise but they got tangled up in the bomber's slipstream. The Gotha had almost reached the coast when it attempted to land at Harrietsham airfield but crashed in the attempt, only the rear gunner surviving.* The victory was credited to Turner and Barwise, each receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross (London Gazette of 11 June 1918).* The Brisfit was C851, flown by Lt Edward Eric Turner (nicknamed "Bum") and observer Lt H.B.* Barwise.* The SE5a was C1804, pilot Major F. Sowrey.**
Originally Biggin Hill was used for early wireless experiments, but was then established in 1917 as part of the inner patrol zone of the London Air Defense Area. No. 141 Squadron, R.F.C., was posted in with Bristol Fighters, each of which sported a bright red cockerel painted on the fuselage. At this time Zeppelin attacks were falling off, and raids by the German Gotha bombers were increasing. Before the end of World War One Biggin was able to claim at least one of these raiders.*

One bomber came into England near Wakering, was hit by gunfire, and dropped in flames off the Maplin sands.

One bomber came into England south of Blackwater river and had to land with engine trouble near Clacton or Saint Osyth, made a bad landing, killing the commander while two other crew survived.
+ Lt.d.R. Wilhelm Rist, Essex, ° 14/09/1885 Göppingen, observer Bosta 15 KIA 20 May
Other crewmembers were Vizefeldwebels Max Gummelt and Rudolf Huhnsdorf. The plane was marked ‘Pommern’ and the name was underlined.

One bomber was brought down in flames in the sea off Dover by the gun defences over there and the wreckage was found soon after near the Knuckle light. It seems that one body was found and the remains of the plane by the armed trawler WH Podd

Three Gotha’s were shot down and a fourth seems to have crashed through bad flying say British sources but there are other reports of more.

Probably not a BG 3 loss was another Friedrichshafen GIII which landed at Hulst on the 8th of November 1918, and which also was set a fire by it’s own crew as far as we knew.
However a new found report says that the plane did hit the threes while it was trying to land and was coming from Flanders, trying to get to Liege. The plane turned over, killing instantly Lt. Wendt, an unknown sergeant and the wole survivor was a certain Helmcke.
In von Eberhardt we found : Sorgers Heinrich, flieger and pilot who died according the source at Brugelette-Varenne. If we had not found a Leutnant Herbert Wendt, which had died at the same place according to the source, we would never have been able to find the full names of the killed crewmembers.

The day after the Armistice, the 12th a last Friedrichshafen G III was interned in Holland, it concerned 802/17, it never saw Dutch service, and we do not know if it was returned, or had to much damage. It landed near Gronsveld. Also unclear if this was a BG 3 plane or not. But there’s little chance to this.
It had the Mercedes engines 38467 and 39873.

Bogohl III was demobilised at the end of November 1918 at Frankfurt an der Oder.
