I believe that the “ADAWAY.G.H” named on the Mitcham war memorial is:

Pte. 8901 George Henry Adaway , 2nd Bedfordshire Regt.  Whose family home address was 5 Bath Road Mitcham, Surrey.

He is not to be found on CWGC register, nor does he appear in SDGW. The National Archive shows there is a MIC entry for this soldier, and some of his service/pension papers have survived and can be viewed on ancestry.

He first joined the Army in Jan 1907, serving in Gibraltar, Bermuda and S.Africa before serving in France between 4.10.14 and 18.1.16, when he was then sent home. The papers clearly show that he was medically discharged suffering from Tuberculosis of the lung “as the result of active service exposure” and was awarded a pension, his pension number was 68667. The papers also include notice of his death on 11.2.17, which is confirmed by a GRO entry : Deaths Mar 1917, Adaway  George H, 28, Croydon 2a 665.

If I’ve understood the IFCP criteria correctly, then I believe Pte. 8901 George Henry Adaway is a candidate for a CGWC entry.

In addition to a death certificate, what other evidence would be needed apart from the above?

Chris

He will almost certainly qualify if his cause of death was TB rather than some cause unrelated to service. The death certificate should clear up that point.

Terry,

Thanks for the link. I'm still attempting to positively indentify some 60 other names on the Mitcham war memorial, there are nearly 600 in total. I believe I have other post-discharge candidates and was thinking of submitting them via the IFCP website en block once I have the data. Does the project still have funds to obtain death certificates?

The old grey matter is not in gear, I'm I right in thinking if Pte. Adaway should appear in the register, then the status of any know grave should change. Actually, I have no idea where "George Henry Adaway" is buried.

No problem. However, send me an email or PM with your email address and I'll send you a copy of the 'rules' to smooth things on their way.

Chris,

On a slight tangent, I think your work on the Mitcham War Memorial has a slight overlap with research I've been doing into the rolls of honour of the Central Council for Church Bell Ringers, and the Surrey Association for Church Bell Ringers.  I tried to send you a pm, but your inbox seems to be full, so I've emailed the info I have instead.  Let me know if it doesn't come through, and I'll try again.

David,

Sorry, I'd like to empty my inbox after archiving it's contents, if I can work out how to do it. I have received your email, it's excellent work you've done and I will of course reply in full ASAP. Thank you for getting in touch.

Chris,

You won't believe this but I actually have the fiche for the Church Road Cemetery Mitcham, which is the graveyard for st. Peter & Paul Mitcham. It's home to my Gt. Gt. Grandfather's family grave, my  Gt.Grandfathers family grave.

But I have no way of reading the fiche at the moment. So please thank CGM for me. What database did they access?

I'm trying to track down a living descendent of G.H.Adaway at the moment and have three other names on the go at the same time.

Terry,

I'll send you a PM with my email address.

Once again, thank you all for your interest in his case.

Chris.
