Excellent  news re Capt Arrowsmith.
Part of his story can be found here http://frontforum.we....php?f=52&t=964 Where i posted about his death and John Hartley picked it up.
His grave can be found to the right of the entrance of Oxbridge cemtery, Stockton on Tees, just behind the gate house.

I just want to thank everyone who helped with getting Charles Ingram commemorated.  Especially (and these are in no particular order):
Terry and the IFCP for processing the case
Chris Harley, for contacting the local council and locating Charles' unmarked grave
CGM, for visiting the cemetery, and placing a poppy cross with a message I sent there on Remembrance Day last year
and Phil Evans, who found the crucial page in Charles' records on Ancestry that I had missed

Just to recap Charles' story, he was an old soldier who had served with the Essex Regiment for over 20 years as a younger man.  He re-enlisted in October 1914, aged fifty nine.  His son, William, had been killed in action in September, serving with the Highland Light Infantry on the Aisne, and I cannot help but wonder if this is what prompted Charles to rejoin the army.  He spent 2 years and a bit with various reserve battalions in England  before being assigned to the 6th Infantry Labour Coy of the  Northamptonshire Regiment, which later became 144 Coy, Labour Corps.  He  went with his unit to France in late March 1917 and served with them  until being taken ill with bronchitis in June and being evacuated back  to England a few days later.  He ended up in Exeter, and was in at least  two military hospitals in the area before being discharged in August  (the discharge was approved on 28 August and confirmed on 19 September).  He died on 27 May 1918.

It means so much to me that Charles is finally commemorated alongside his son and the other thousands of men who gave their lives.  I can't help but wonder what he must have felt, when he was working on the railways near Arras and later on the roads of Flanders in the run up to the 3rd Battle of Ypres, watching the young men passing going up to the line and knowing that many of them would, like his son, never return.  We always think of the young men killed in action, but Charles' story should be a lesson that it was not just the young who suffered.

Many thanks to all who helped.

Cheers,
Carole.

Chris, judging from some of the threads where you've added details of commemorations being moved from the Book of Remembrance, I guess it's pot luck whether it takes a few months or a couple of years?

I popped into the cemetery in February, and visited the grave while I was there.
It is a very peaceful place with a special atmosphere. Very small and intimate.

Hi CGM

Thank you for visiting, it means a lot to know that others remember him.

I do mean to visit eventually, but am waiting until there's a memorial as being "Up North", it's not a trip I can just make on a whim.

Cheers,
Carole.
