would anybody know were this pic would of been taken? my grandfather is in it and i know he was sumwere around salonika 1916 when he was sick and then discharged..........he serverd with the royal dublin fusiliers

i think managed to work it cheers for the help,,,,,,,i know me grandfather went to salonika october 1915 and was discharged due to sickness sumtime early 1916,,,,i stil dont know what battalion he serverd with not been able to find it out at all,,,, all i know is this --william duffy royal dublin fusiliers -9352

ive been told the pic could be in malta.italy or france ,,,,,,,

Are you absolutely certain that your grandfather served in Salonika?

The reason why I ask is that his 9352 service number is for a 1905 Regular Army enlistment which could indicate that he was a reservist at the outbreak of the war.

Only the 6th & 7th Service Battalions of the Dubs served in Salonika but your man's MIC date of entry for France is 9 February 1915 which indicates that he was part of a reinforcement draft for the 2nd Battalion - the only Dubs unit in F&F at that time.

It is possible that he could have been wounded in quick order after his arrival in F&F then shipped back to the UK for recuperation to then be transferred to either the 6th or 7th Btn before their sailing for Gallipoli in July 1915 and their subsequent movement to Salonika.

it was my grandmother who said he served in salonika,,,,,,,, the problem i have is his discharged papers are kinda faidn away and hard to read it says october 1915 med? that all i can read ,,,,,,,,,,,any ider what would come after med? mediana? macadoina?  not 100% sure about salonika, i know he singned up august 8th 1914 and discharged august 8th1916 due to sickness. he was only in france till may 1915 then he reapears again october 1915,as far as i know he was never wounded,,,,,,

If your grandfather was in F&F between February to May 1915 then he would have been involved in the Second Battle of Ypres. Is there any suggestion of gassing?

The Med reference to October 1915 could be his posting to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force but that form of detail is highly unlikely on Discharge papers.

Any chance of a scan?

he said sumting 2 me uncle about gassing but he said it blew back on the germans,,,after they released it,,,,i can scan the discharged papers tomorow im away at the mo,,,,, he got the S.W.B ALSO IN JANUARY 1917, i take it he could of been anywere in the mediterranean then?

The type of windowcil could be significant in identifying your location.  An architectural/historical website may be able to assist you.  To me it looks more mediterranean than french.

Will:  I have a man  Patrick Delaney, 9364 1st Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers, a 1905 enlistee. Their serial numbers are only 12 digits apart.  Possibly they both joined up in the same month or so?

I've just found out that someone im researching also went to Salonika with the 12th battalion Cheshire Rgt around November 15? could he have been a Cheshire man?
