Dear all,

As promised to various fellow Forum members, here is my current list of Australian nurses who served in the QAIMNSR. It does not include those who served solely in the Territorials or the Australian Voluntary Hospital. The list also includes names I have found that I cannot associate with any service at present. Would appreciate any help that can be given with the married names I cannot associate with maiden names. Thanks to Frev and Jenny for some recent additions.

cheers
Kirsty

Hi Kirsty – hope you had a great Christmas in WA. (Hope you had a good one too Jenny)

Finally found some time to start scanning through your ginormous list (thanks for sharing)
A few notes so far:

Abberton, Marion (Mrs)
I doubt whether she was Australian – or even a nurse – as she married Joseph Abberton in the Jul-Sep Qtr of 1919 at Chorlton in Lancashire – and the fact that they refer to a child travelling with her, when she died on the 30/9/1919 – more likely she had previously been widowed by the war.
[her name when she married Abberton (an Imperial Reservist) was Blackwell, but whether this was her maiden name or a previous marriage – I haven’t yet established]

Beardmore Smith, G
The AIF Medical file is actually for G. Beadsmore Smith – same name as the English Matron in chief of the QAIMNS (at one stage) – Miss (Dame) Ann(e) Beadsmore Smith – such an unusual sort of name, but can’t seem to find a connection……

Brazier, VF
VF Brazier as you’ve noted was an Imperial Reservist – he was a Private (7016) in the North Staffordshire Regiment (Nursing Staff), and was mobilised in NSW & reported to the authorities on the 14/9/1914, but didn’t embark for O/S because he was found to be medically unfit.

Bruce, L
I have a Mrs Lydia Bruce, a 33 yr old Red Cross VAD Nurse who embarked at Fremantle on the Osterley 4/10/1916 – sailing as one of 30 VAD’s, requested by the British Red Cross to work as probationers in English hospitals. She returned to WA on the Orsova, embarking England 18/7/1919

Butler, BF
I believe this to be Beatrice Travers Butler – (page 5 of the NAA record – meant to be a T not F)
[see the other thread for her details]

Byrne, Margaret Mary
This nurse was born c1912 – NAA file is a WW2 record - 1943 (giving her age as 31)

Eyebottle, KG
Curious as to where you found this one – I can’t find existence of the name…..anywhere!

Ferrier, Elizabeth Marie Beatrice
? why do you think she was a QA?

Grasby, Kate
Heathorn, Rose
According to their applications for War Gratuities, these 2 nurses were actually retained for home service only, and served at No. 12 AGH from 1917 to 1919 [even though they are on the Devon Hospital Honor Roll as supposedly serving O/S]

Will keep having a look at them as I get time....
Cheers, Frev

PS - there should be a 'delete' button at the bottom of your first post, if you still want to try & get rid of it.

Hi Team

Thanks for your responses. We might knock this into shape by the time of the Centenary!

Re: Eyebottle KG

Tee hee, have now figured out that this is probably RGI Bottle - ie. Ruth Bottle - this is one of the lovely phonetic entries that found its way into Marianne Barker's work.

cheers

Kirsty

PS thanks for the directions on deleting post no. 1

Glad to see I no longer have to scroll through quite so many names

2 more I've looked at:

Affleck, M, QA?

The contents of the NAA file MT1487/1 titled: “AFFLECK, M – Nursing Staff”, actually refers to
VAD Members B and M AFFLECK SCOTT, Nursing Staff
RTA 29/1/1921 on the Ascanius, for Ballarat

These 2 sisters Marion Lidderdale SCOTT & Julia Burn SCOTT (both born Maryborough, Vic) where daughters of Gerard Affleck SCOTT who ‘styled’ himself as Dr AFFLECK SCOTT.
They also ‘styled’ themselves as AFFLECK SCOTT – [although Marion’s death in England in 1979 is actually registered twice – as Marion Lidderdale SCOTT & Marion Affleck SCOTT. [reg 20 1151]
The sisters were living together in Ballarat in 1914

Herring, Mary Beatrice,

HERRING, Mary Beatrice – Assistant Matron, QAIMNSR
[MC: QAIMNSR – Assistant Matron / SR]

Born 1866 Wellington, NZ – daughter of John Edward HERRING (d.1896, Archdeacon of Beechworth) & Margaret EATON (d.1902) – who were born & married England

The family arrived in Australia in 1870 (when Mary was age 4)
Siblings (9), include: Winifred May b.1876 Ballarat (nurse)

Living Clunes 1871; Kyneton 1879
Matriculated from the private school “Sorbonne” in Sth Yarra in 1884
[Missionary in India?]

Travelled to London in September 1907 on the Oruba

RTA on the Bremen, embarking England 28/5/1920 – Nursing Staff, free passage in return for service – [MT1487/1]

1924 ER: Trained nurse – Day St, Bairnsdale (also with Winifred May, trained nurse)
1931 – 1949 ER: Both at Healesville Rd, Ringwood (“Okahahivis”)

Died 5/7/1949 Melb, age 83
Buried Boroondara Cemetery, Kew

The Argus, Thur 7 Jul 1949:
DEATHS
HERRING – On July 5, at Melbourne, Mary Beatrice, beloved eldest daughter of the late Archdeacon and Mrs J.E. Herring, aged 83 years.
FUNERAL NOTICES
HERRING – The Funeral of the late Miss MARY BEATRICE HERRING will leave Sleight’s Funeral Home, St Kilda road, Melbourne, THIS DAY (Thursday), after a service, commencing at 10.30am, for the Boroondara Cemetery, Kew.

Cheers, Frev

Came across this lady whilst working on my Married O/S Database - although unfortunately her marriage in England doesn't help establish who she served with (damn!) - thought I'd pass on the details anyway.

EMBLING, Olive Lettie Henty - O/S War Nursing

Born 1888 Hawthorn – daughter of (Dr) Herbert Augustus EMBLING (WW1: Lt Col, AAMC, Sea Tspt) & Edith Mary (Lettie) HENTY

Living in Sth Yarra 1909, of independent means

Travelled to England on the Osterley, arriving Plymouth 24th May 1912 (with Mr & Mrs Henty)

Gippsland Times, Thur 25 Aug 1913:
The engagement has been announced in London of Miss Olive Embling and Mr Arthur Throssel.

Gippsland Times, Thur 28 Aug 1913:
The engagement was recently announced of Miss Olive Embling, daughter of Mr H.A. Embling, formerly of Hawthorn, and now of Korong Vale, to Mr Arthur G. Throssell. Mr Throssell is editor of the London “Sportsman”.
[Arthur Graham Throssell – b.1881 Kew, Vic – son of Frederick & Isabel (nee Robertson) – WW1: Sgt, 19th Royal Fusiliers & 2nd Lieut 2 Rifle Bde – d.1942 Buckinghamshire]

Gippsland Times, Mon 4 Oct 1915:

Report by Matron E. Green, 83 C.S.H. (SR, p.17):
Staff Nurse Mrs E.E. Jordan (nee Campbell) served under me for two months. I consider her a thoroughly well trained nurse, very reliable & efficient in every way. She takes a keen interest in her work & shows ability in the training & management of orderlies.
She is tactful, good tempered & has a good influence on her fellow workers.

Left Unit on Leave 29/6/18 – embarked on the Aronda 1/7/18 for leave in India

Report from Matron-in-Chief, Beatrice Jones: (p.29 SR)
Reference your telegram No M/2740 dated 15th August 1918.
I do not recommend the marginally named Lady
[her name & details in margin] for retention in the Service; she married without permission, and I do not consider that her work is up to the standard of Nursing or efficiency which justifies the expense caused the Government.
I have found from experience, that as soon as Nurses marry they become disinterested in their work and show a great lack of discipline; they have no consideration for the Service whatsoever and yet at the same time demand that every consideration should be shown to them and have privileges given to them over and above the rest of the Nursing Staff, which naturally leads to a great deal of discontent and dissatisfaction.

Married Francis Victor (Frank) JORDAN (Captain in the Royal Engineers) – in India in July/August 1918

Struck off strength 1/10/18 on failing to return from Leave

From another Report similar to above, dated 18/10/1918 (p.30)
“This Lady signed A.F.W-3538 on the 10th May 1918. Before forwarding them I asked her if she intended marrying, and she said she would not marry before the termination of war. She proceeded on leave on the 1st July 1918, and married almost immediately.”

Resignation initially shown as 25/12/1918 in India, on account of marriage
This was held over until 14/1/1919 – and she embarked the following day at Bombay on the Themistocles for return to Australia.
[NAA file: JORDON, EE (Mrs) – RTA 15/1/1919 Themistocles – embarked Bombay]
The Themistocles arrived in Sydney 5/2/1919

1939: Frank Victor Jordan (Electrical Engineer, age 51) & Effie Elizabeth Jordan (Housewife, 51) left Basrah, Iraq on the Kohistan, arriving Avonmouth 19/3/1939, with the intention of living in Sandy, Bedfordshire, England

1953: Francis Jordan (age 70) & Effie E Jordan (age 66) sailed from Melbourne, returning to England on the Hector, arriving Liverpool 1/5/1953 (address: Haingdon-on-Thames)

Died Jul-Sept Qtr 1968 Battle, Sussex, England

Gippsland Times, Mon 24 May 1915:
PERSONAL
Miss Effie Campbell goes on to England for instructions as to further movements there.

Gippsland Times, Mon 2 Dec 1918:
PERSONAL
There are a large number of residents in this district who will remember Mr Andrew Campbell, of Maffra, who, we regret to report, died in South Africa last month. Some years ago Mr Campbell was a prominent athlete in this district, and was a popular member of the Maffra Football Club. A little over a year ago he paid a visit to Australia, and, returning to South Africa, married an Australian girl over there. His brother, Donald, died about two months ago. Another brother, Jack, is in Africa, and a sister, Nurse Effie Campbell, is on active service abroad. All were well known in the Maffra district.

[Francis Victor (Frank) Jordan b.c1883 Biggleswade, Bedfordshire – son of William JORDAN & Marion HOWITT]
[1911 Census: Francis Victor Jordan (Electrical Engineer with the Corporation Electricity Dept, age 29) – born Hatfield, Hertfordshire, is living with his wife Helena in Warrington, Lancashire]
[Francis Victor Jordan b. Apr-Jun Qtr 1882 Hatfield, Hertfordshire]

Brit MC: F.V. Jordan – Captain in the Royal Engineers – first served Mesopotamia from 30/10/16 (Iraq)
Addresses: 1. Bungalow 138, Fer….epine, Ca….. Pujab, India / 2. Holme Mills, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire

[From an on-line document by H. Orchard, dated 1962]
FRANCIS VICTOR JORDAN
Francis Victor Jordan who died on the 12th August 1961 was born on the 15th March 1884. He was educated at Ivel Bury and at Wellingborough Schools, and part-time at Swindon Technical School. For four years he was a pupil with W.H. Allen Sons and Co., and after 10 years in various municipal electricity departments he left England to take up an Indian appointment in the Kolar Gold Fields.
In 1916 he was commissioned in the Royal Engineers, attaining the rank of major, with a mention in despatches for his work in Mesopotamia. With the war over, he joined Metropolitan-Vickers Ltd., India, as an erecting engineer until 1928, when he joined Callender’s Cable and Construction Co., India. First he was on the erection of the overhead transmission grid for the Sutlej Barrage Scheme, passing thence to Bahrain, where the electricity undertaking was still young. Then he was in Western Persia, and later went up to Mosul, where he was in charge for Callender’s until he became chief engineer and manager to the Mosul Electricity and Water Board. His appreciation of Iraq, and of Mosul in particular, was clear to all his friends, and when, in 1936, he became chief engineer, Department of Municipalities, for the whole of Iraq, his satisfaction was a little marred by the thought of losing some touch with his dear Mosul.
He retired from Iraq service in 1937, but soon found he was wanted at home and served with the Air Ministry maintenance department until 1945.
He was happily married to an Australian lady, who shared all his adventures and wanderings in parts of the world still remote, and by whom he is survived. He belongs to that dwindling band of electrical engineers who did so much, in small beginnings, to bring the first rays of comfort and amenity into thousands of hot, ill-ventilated, badly-lit Eastern homes.
He joined The Institution as an Associate Member in 1927 and was elected a Member in 1938. W.G.H.

[Brit SR: Jordan, Eva C]

Kai Tiaki: the journal of the nurses of New Zealand, Vol IX, Issue 2, Apr 1916:
Mentioned in Despatches
Under the New Year’s Honours in January 8th number of the ‘British Journal of Nursing,’ among many names mentioned by Sir John French for gallant and distinguished service in the field, we note those of Miss E.C. Jordan, and Miss E.L. Craig, members of Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve from New Zealand.
Miss Eva Clare Jordan we know well. She was trained at the Auckland Hospital, being qualified in 1903; was a sister on the staff till 1910; and was then for some time in Suva, private nursing. On the outbreak of war Miss Jordan went to England and offered her services which were accepted by the Red Cross Society and she was at a voluntary aid detachment Convalescent Home. She then became attached to the Q.A.I.M.N.S.R. and was sent to France where she has been ever since and some of her letters have been published in our columns.

HI there

Annie Alice Lowe trained at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, graduating in February 1916 after four years. She then nursed at a private hospital at the Clarence River. I currently have no record of her being on home service before going overseas on active service, but she might have done so.

The RPAH has an archivist you can contact if you want more detailed information.

Hi Folks,
Re
"Forrest, Eliza Annette [also Annette only] [Annetta] [also Neta, Netta], QAIMNSR/AVH"
This lady is a family member and she has been my research project for a little while. Her birth name is Eliza ANNETTAForrest. I know some of the records say Annette but this a typo in the source document. We called her Netta or Net.

She is Australian, born in country Victoria. She trained in Victoria and volunteered for QAIMNSR whilst on a working holiday in the UK. She served in France and was awarded the Royal Red Cross, 2nd Class. She returned to Melbourne in 1919 and became a midwife and baby health nurse, possibly influenced in this decision by the death of an infant sibling when she was still a child. She never married. She is part of a WW1 Nurse exhibition proposed for 2014 at the Bourke Museum, Beechworth, Victoria. Needless to say we are very proud to have her in our family.

I can supply more, just not sure what you are looking for or what your project is. I would also be interested to know what records you may have.

Hi Sue & welcome to the forum.

I've been trying to gather details (ie. write biographies) on all those women who served overseas during the war - other than in the Australian forces.
I make these records available to anyone interested - and hopefully one day will be able to put together a website or some such!!

Kirsty & I are trying to compare notes on the nurses that served in the QAIMNSR (when I'm not side-tracked on other things that is) - so that's what the above list is all about for now.

Below are my notes on your relative - and I'd be interested in anything you're willing to add.

Cheers, Frev

Hello.I am honouring the service of Emily Grace Chappell who enlisted with the Australian Army Nursing Service on 26 December 1916.Details of her service are listed in a booklet produced for a special commemoration on Remembrance Day last November (2012) at the site of the Ovens District Hospital, Beechworth,Victoria ,Australia.Sister Chappell was one of 15 nurses who gained their qualifications at the hospital and subsequently served in WW1. A memorial to them was unveiled at the 2012 Rembrance Day ceremony.Emily Chappell was born in the Victorian border town of Yarrawonga, on the Murray River. She was 27 when she embarked for the war. The records are confusing. Her official document prepared under The AIF Project by the UNSW, Canberra, shows Staff Nurse Chappell's Unit embarked from Sydney ,NSW, on the HMAT A32 "Themistocles" on 29 December 1916. However, the listing in the Ovens District Hospital booklet states she departed from Melbourne,Victoria, on the SS "Mooltan" in late December 1916.Her first posting was to the Cumballa War Hospital in Bombay. Then, in February 1917, Sister Chappell was transferred to the 475-bed hospital ship "Ellora". The ship operated between Basra at the head of the Persian Gulf and Bombay. The challenge of caring for the sick and wounded patients was exacerbated by the heat and lack of ventilation on the ship. After serving most of 1917 on the "Ellora", Sister Chappell was appointed to the Victoria War Hospital in Bombay, which had 600 beds. She was transferred in November 1918 to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital (AAH) at Dartford, near London,England. This was a 1400-bed hospital which specialised in treating patients with nervous conditions and war-related neuroses. Emily Chappell returned to Australia on 22 March 1919. I first met Miss Chappell in 1949, some 30 years after she had returned home. She was living with her sister and a nephew and neice in the Melbourne suburb of Glenhuntley."Aunt Em" as she was known, had a cheery personality and happy disposition despite having a most debilitating medical condition. She died at the age of 71 in 1960.

Hi Tribute - and welcome to the forum

Emily Chappell did sail on the Mooltan as noted in the ODH Booklet (she is listed as same in the Embarkation Roll) - unfortunately the AIF Project has the incorrect details.

Hello Frev.
Thanks for the welcome and confirmation that Emily Chappell sailed on the "Mooltan"
I don't know where the author of the ODH booklet article would have found that Emily returned to nursing after she came home. Do you know of any documentation in this regard? I believe her ill health would have prevented her from working for many of the 30 years before I met her.
Best wishes,

Hi Tribute,

Welcome and many thanks for your contribution. I did have contact with the lady who researched the nurses for the ODH booklet but would need to search for her details for you, if you would like to contact her.

In my database I have no reference to her working. She was on the AANS Reserve reserve list by 1925 (which generally meant you weren't nursing anymore) and applied for repatriation assistance in 1937.

The AIF database is tragic in relation to the nurses as the authors of it have tried to fit nurses into the set up that they have used for soldiers. It is not the official record - the personal records are held at the National Archives of Australia and can be accessed online.

cheers

Tribute & Kirsty...

The Electoral Rolls give the impression that Emily continued nursing right up until 1954 (at least) - as her occupation is still shown as 'Nurse' up until then - so it would be an easy assumption to make.

The contact details of the lady who did the research for the booklet can be found on page 3 (of the booklet).

Emily Chappell was definitely NOT working in 1949, and I would think had not nursed for many years before then.
I will contact the author of the ODH booklet as you suggest.
Best wishes,

This thread is quite long now, and I may have missed her, but is Harriet Elizabeth Watson (later Mrs. Richmond) on your nurse radar? She was born in Bendigo, trained at Bendigo Hospital, and came to England with her mother in 1910 'for a pleasure trip' but stayed, later joining the Territorial Force Nursing Service at the outbreak of war. I have details from her file here if it's of any use.
