Hi I wonder if anyone may have any idea as to why this bradford peace medal should be damaged in this way!!!!.   Some years ago I bought the first peace medal which was ok I recently bought another one via Ebay It was only when it arrived I realised

it was mutilated I.E. Someone had tried fairly sucsessfully to erase the name of the Lord Mayor W.BARBER J.P. Which has to mean that this guy was not at all popular at least to the person who went to considerable trouble to erase this Mayors Name.

Has anyone got any idea`s / thoughts as why this guy was not popular.  Any help would be appreciated. Andy.

He appears to have been Lord Mayor for less than a year in 1918/19.

A couple of years ago I ploughed through Bradford newspapers on microfilm, and followed one tight through 1919, without noticing, OK it wasn't what I was looking for, and particular issues regarding the Lord Mayor.  The local studies library is virtually closed at present on H&S grounds, so it would be difficult to follow up.
Of course, it doesn't have to be an adult action, children do all kinds of things with their toys, sometimes for quite irrational reasons. keith

Walter Barber was the deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford who only became Lord Mayor in June 1919 when the incumbent Joseph Hayhurst (first Labour LM of Bradford) died.  Is it possible that the disfiguration is an attempt to insert Barber's name over Hayhurst's?

Walter Baber had been the Secretary of the Bradford Trades Council who were against conscription and looking for peace by negotiation thoughout the war. His Son [Mark] Revis Barber was a conscientious objector and was sent to prison, however after the war feeling changed and he went on to become an Alderman for Bradford and supported and led the dream of a University for Bradford

For more information see
http://bradfordww1.b...-objectors.html

there is also a book -  Liberalism and the rise of Labour, 1890-1918 - which mentions Revis Barber and the general peace movement going on in Bradford at the time

Hope this helps
