It has been mentioned on the Forum before that the Northamptons insignia were worn on the back between the shoulder blades, but I don't have any proof for that apart from never having seen any insignia on the top of the arm. There are a series of pictures of the battalion taken in 1917 and no soldier has any upper arm insignia (apart from rank stripes and spscialist patches, of course).

Thank you very much for that info, that fills in the gaps for my chart of the 18 Division. Can i trouble you further and as if you have any info on the Northumberland Fusiliers bns (except 34 Div) and Lancashire Fusiliers bns (except 29 Div). This info would fill in so many gaps in my charts.

Good to see all this detail. My interest in the 18th div, my father served in it (TM RFA) has not reached that level, I don't expect it will. However may I pose a couple of questions about these patches; were the only worn by infantry? and what was their function?

Hello Tom,

These perticular formation signs that have been given are purely for that unit. Divisional and Brigade formation signs where worn would be for those attached to them. As far as I am aware the function of the formation sign was for unit identification purposes.

However, I stand to be corrected!

Hi Tom

Battle patches were for what we would call now 'command and control'. With no cap badge with wearing the steel helmet, identification in the heat, smoke and din of battle was difficult so these patches were introduced. There was no time to ask a soldier which unit he belonged to but the patches identified the wearers unit without the need to ask. Even the dead provided clues to were a unit was at on the battlefield

Below you will find the Bdes and Units of the 58th. Inf Div, June 1917 [France] As you must be aware by now a lot of material is missing from the I-d Pamphlet. However, going by the information that there is in there, there is a pattern of sorts with 173rd Red; 174th Dark Blue & 175th Dark Green. See below:

2nd/1st London Regiment [Royal Fusiliers]
Rectangle Red 2 ½”X1” Felt!! This rectangle is given as horizontal in the source!

2nd/2nd London Regiment [Royal Fusiliers]
Square Red 2” sides Felt

2nd/3rd London Regiment [Royal Fusiliers]
Triangle Red 2½” sides Felt

2nd/4th London Regiment [Royal Fusiliers]
Horizontal Rectangle Red 3”X1” Felt

174th Bde
5th London Regiment [London Rifle Brigade]
Vertical Rectangle Dark Blue 1”X3” Felt!! This unit is given as the 5th Bn however, the information given would fit the pattern of the Bde and the 2nd/5th!

2nd/6th London Regiment [City of London Rifles]
Diamond Navy Blue 2½” sides Felt!! Not a square! The colour is also described as navy blue rather than dark blue like the others in the Bde! Personally, I would say that the 'square' information is missing from the source!

Square Olive Green 2½” sides Cotton!! Again the colour is described as olive green and not dark green like the others in the Bde! Plus this is the only unit not to have their flash made out of felt! However, I should imagine that the information is missing from the source!
