I have just aquired a pair of medals to a soldier of the King's Shropshire L.I., Pte John James Aldred, 5830, although the medals are for the Boer War, could he have served in the first World War, I have found only one document conserning him which is attached, Does anyone have any further info on this soldier, and what part of Brittain does this sername originate.
any help to finding out more on this soldier would be very much appriciated

went to france 25/7/1915 he was a lance corpral with the regiment number 7455 and a private sr/7455

To answer the 2ns part of your question, the surname is of norman origin and the main distribution in the UK is in the Lancashire/Greater Manchester area.

Private 5830 J Aldred of the 2nd Battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry served in the 2nd Boer War was entitled to the Queen's South AFrica medal with clasps for Paardeberg, Dreifontein, Cape Colony & Transvaal; plus the King's South Africa Medal with the 1901 and 1902 clasps. The KSA Roll complied in June 1903 notes that he had been transferred to Class "A" Reserve.

Looking at Paul Nixon's site, his join date appears to be the latter part of 1898, which probably means that he is the one born March Quarter 1879 in Blackburn RD. (The only other ones near that date are 1871 Wandsworth and 1886 Oldham).

I have his QSA-KSA
