My hope this is the place for sharing WWI themed art.

I will start things off with a simple watercolor of a medic outside a triage tent. This was a very grim scene so I avoided the normal flesh tones.

Do you have more? Or a link to a website that displays more?

Hello Ken,

This is my first WWI study. (I've spent most of the last few years producing cartoons). I plan on posting all future works on this thread. Thank you for your interest.

Here's a study that did not go as planned. So I took it to its logical conclusion and experimented a bit.

Nice work, Bob. When I first looked at your medic, I thought 'That's a WW2 face', but then realised that, no, it's an American face.  My perception is coloured, I think, by the fact that, like many here in the UK, I grew up with boys' comics filled inter alia with heroic war stories (mostly British and many set in WW1).  Many of us, I think, would attribute the start of our interest in military history to these comics.  Is this a genre you are familiar with?  Artistically, these larger format 'general adventure' comics, for younger boys, and mainly in colour, are probably more interesting than the small format war comics ('Commando' series, etc, generally in b/w) that many of us graduated to as we grew older.

Hello Siege,

The medic was based on a photo of a WWI US soldier. Comics played a role but television made a larger impact with shows like Combat and Rat Patrol. Later came serious studies like The World at War series narrated by Laurence Olivier and a plethora of magazines like Marshal Cavendish's History of the Second World War. My brother and I had amazed a large library of books and periodicals before we entered high school. Eventually we went out separate ways: I pursued war games and he collected military regalia.

Thank you, Roger.

Here is a study of a French foot soldier (not exactly in uniform) navigating through a water filled trench. Not a pleasant existence.

Thanks for posting Bob, some interesting pieces. Your work reminds me of an artist in Ypres, similar in style, I shall try and find a link for his web-site and post it for you. Regards Sean

Excellent work Bob - keep them coming.

Particularly liked the shell shocked officer, you've captured the 'shock' well.

Thanks Dave; I will continue to do my best.

Here is my first attempt at a war machine (British Mark IV). I have discovered that the rendering of vehicles is more challenging than I had anticipated.

Thanks again Bob, its actually a Mk. IV fitted with a "Tadpole Tail" attachment. Built to deal with the widening German trenches, but ultimately useless. As far as Im aware the Tails were sent to France, but made the Tank twist and even more difficult to steer, so the idea was dropped. Regards Sean

Thanks for posting Bob. 7th June 1917, the day that started my interest in the GW. A relative of mine, Pte. William Connolly, who served with 1st/7th City of London Battalion, London Regiment, was KIA on the day the mines were blown. His company(A) were fighting around the White Chateau area. He is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial :poppy: regards Sean
