Hi Jonathan
Some excerpts that may help you, from - Geoff Barr’s “Military Discipline” in the 1st AIF
(Chap 4 Gallipoli and Military Police)
“
The MPs were tasked with the close protection of senior officers during the landings but these duties changed when they were compelled to take the fight to the Turks.”
As the campaign stalled:
“
The MPs were re-tasked. Their role in protecting Headquarters Staff would continue, but also they would be asked to protect the landing area from insurgents and maintain law and order among the troops.”
“
Those MPs employed on the Beach were tasked with supervising the evacuation of the wounded, escorting new drafts to their units, and supervising the unloading of supplies from the lighters to storage areas.”
“
Guarding Prisoners of War (POW) was another task assigned to them.”
After talk of Turkish/German spies landing on the beach, security was stepped up:
Order issued 16th July 1915: “
After to-day no men allowed within Anzac area unless on duty, under control or holding passes signed by Commanding Officers. No bathing passes admit ANZAC after 1900 and a drive of the Beach will be made daily not later than 2000.”
