Hi chums,

The IWM are having one of their talks for staff by Pete Simkins at 16.00 on Wednesday 28 March at the IWM - in the old Dome reading room which is not now a public area. We can allow about ten or so members of the GWF to come as our guests but they need to get to the IWM main entrance desk by 15.50. Pete Simkins is talking on the 12th Division. The meeting is private so no reviews or comment on the internet afterwards please....

Myself and Bryn Hammond are going for certain. I would propose that we then go for a few pints in our regular London booze up at the Pineapple starting from about 17.30. Neither I nor Bryn can stay much beyond 20.00 - still got to recover from Birmingham!!!!

Any one interested. I think Tony E expressed interest. Can you let me know as I have to act as the reception committeee.

Underling Pete

Much as I'd like to come Pete, distance and job prevent my attendance - but please give my regards to Pete Simkins.

Pete - as it God's own Division you'd better put me down as well please. I'll check with work tomorrow and text you if turns out a problem.

Most, most kind of you to offer Pete; but unfortunately I just can't make it this time...horses to shoe; sheep to dip; cattle to de-horn ...

The title of Pete Simkins talk is:

The performance of the British Army in the fighting on the Western Front in 1918 seen through the prism of 12th (Eastern) Division.

It is the 12th not the 18th Division!!!! New ground breaking stuff! Hope this makes things clearer,

Pete

Many regrets. I am very busy preparing to be a former civil servant on Friday, on redundancy (not retirement). Only 25.5 years' service. I will not be alone in this, so a colleague and friend in the same boat is having his departure drinks tomorrow. So, I am afraid that comes first. I could come on to the Pineapple unless you leave early.

Not many have signed up for the Pineapple but not the talk, Phil, so it's hard to gauge how long we will be there, if most are starting around 5.30. Nevertheless, if you get away in good time and reasonable order, it would be good to see you this evening.

Sorry comrades, but I'm going to have to pull out - I had a bad night with hip pain and not feeling up to SW Trains bouncing me around to London and back.

This would be the weather for a spring picnic on the beach!

I hope to be at the Pineapple about 7-30, so I hope the early-birds last out.

Sorry Glen, I'll probably be driving tonight, so won't be able to guide you home this time.

If anyone's still reading the thread... will go to drinks in about five mins (1700). Will stay an hour or so. Be at Pineapple c. 1830 with a following wind. Beware, I will be carrying something to upset Mr Broomfield.

I would have loved to have been there, especially as I share "PMHart"'s (whoever he is) admiration of the 18th and 12th Divisions, but alas! THEY have made me work today...

Good luck with that POSH shirt, Phil.

Steve.
