Intriguing photo; amazing a 280 pound shell caused so little damage.

Hi
This hole was made front the Louis-le-Grand High School on may 27th 1918 08.07. It seem the hole one can see have been reworked by the city of Paris repare team, before to place the new pavement.
Regards
Chris

French commentators may refer to the Paris Gun as the Grosse Bertha but the Germans called it the Wilhelm Geschutz. The gun that the Germans called Dicke Bertha, or Big Bertha, was the 42cm howitzer.

I think it's rather a shame that this topic does not get covered as much in the English language. It does get mentioned, but as far as I know, never featured.

The extent of the German advances in 1918 have always fascinated me, and that they could get close enough to shell Paris. But at the same time I'm glad the damage to Paris was somewhat minimal.

Hi Jesse,

If you want to read about the Paris Gun in English, try 'The Paris Gun' by Henry W. Miller. The sub-title is 'The bombardment of Paris by the German long-range guns and the great German offensives of 1918'. It was first published in 1930 but a facsimile edition came out a couple of years ago. It will tell you all you want to know!
