Hi everyone, I'm trying to find information with regards my Great Great Grandad who died at Arras on 28/04/1917, i am unsure of his service number in relation to when he would of joined but he would of been around 35 at the time of his death. Thanks for any help you can provide

No pre-1915 war service so he must have first landed after 31 Dec 1915. He only had one number shown on his Medal Card. There are members here who might be able to give you an idea of his enlistment date, one springs to mind but there may be others,Tyneside Chinaman seems to have info.
You might get an idea of what happened on the day of his death from the Battalion War Diary for 22 Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers, which is at the National Archives under WO95/2463,it is not yet digital though.

Thank you both for the information, I've invested in a few books about the Tyneside Scottish but I couldn't find reference to him in the roll call, and the service number didn't match any of the battalions listed, the 24 part not fitting. Thanks again for your help so far and any ideas or further help always appreciated.

If you want info on 1 July 1916 (first day of the Battles of the Somme) the War Diary for 24NF is digital and can be downloaded from the NA Catalogue.
I may get time next week to see what the non-digital 22NF Diary says about the action around 28 April 1917.

I have photos of the diaries for the units for April 1917.  If you send me a PM with an email address I will send you details for the unit on that date.

Thanks If you do find anything out that will be much appreciated, I have only found out from Graham's post that he had initially joined the Tyneside Irish.

How wey Bonny lads divvant bother about reading the book on the Tyneside Irish,

He most likely enlisted at 78 North Road, Durham City, in October 1914, The shop of Mr Lynch the Catholic councilor for Framwellgate. but the rest of the info is as Graham Stewart's post, he read TI by me LOL
