Hi everyone !
Here is a wanted notice for a picture I'm looking for: it is supposed to have been published in the illustrated daily paper "The illustrated War News" in the issue from the 13th January, 1915. On this snapshot one can see - if I stick to Joëlle Beurier's comments - a body thrown up in the air by an explosion blast.

This snapshot would be most helpful to me for my current researches, so if anyone knows where I can find this document, I would be very grateful to him !

Thanks a lot...
Regards

Joan Betty Lee (from France)

Hi Joan.

I have (hopefully) attached a scan of the only illustration from the periodical of that date that is even close to your description. It is not a photograph, nor does it clearly show a man being blown into the air. Perhaps it is from another date, which I may not have as I only have a certain number of the editions. Unfortunately, I had to reduce the dimensions to fit on this post.

Regards,
Scobie

The War Illustrated of 16th January 1915 has an illustration "A German idea of the deadly havoc caused by the explosion of a land mine.....cont"

There are vague shapes of people (?) and horses being thrown outwards by the blast. It is not a photograph.

Click on the illustration for a larger version.

CGM. I do not know how to post pictures on the site, but there is another example on page 335 of the The War Illustrated  "French Land-Mining Wrecks a German Gun" depicting a "flying" body plus gun barrel, can you post it ? Ralph.

There are two such pictures that come to mind and i cant remember where to find either at the momment. One is of a frenchman blown into a tree his overcoat having gone up and over the branch and holding him there. The other of what appears to be a German officer lying on his back in the branches of a tree. will have a look during day.john

Munster. The second one you mention is depicted the the War Illustrated January 1916, supposed to be a sniper having been shot. Ralph.

The photo published by Lancashire Fusilier is annotated " German lieutenant who, having persistently sniped at allied officers, was killed by a fragment of shell"

That photo also appears full page in the "Vivid" Penny War Weekly 16th January 1915 under the title,

"Swift Justice Meets Cowardly German Sniper"

Caption reads,

"German snipers have wrought havoc among our troops, and it is only fitting that swift justice be meted out to these lurking fighters. In order better to carry out his treacherous work, this unfortunate man had climbed a tree, where, being discovered by British soldiers, he had paid the extreme penalty of his treachery. Our striking photograph shows the sinper lying still in death, his body stuck fast to the tree that he had utilised for his purpose of picking off individual soldiers below. Scenes like this bring home the grim and sombre aspect of war shorne of the glamour of its romantic side."

Rather strange really that the German sniper was a cowardly beast whereas our snipers were just snipers.Such is life.

Personally, I would have found a tree with a lot more leaves, and removed my gleaming spiked helmet! Not sure this man was actually a ' sniper '.

Very bad weather that day, high winds blew all the leaves from the trees and the camouflage from his helmet, which he kept on as he didnt want it pinched by a British trophy hunter if he left it lying around.
