[PBI in the HAC]

I have been trying to identify a soldier in a  picture in another topic, but I'm stuck with the activities of the 5th Bn Pioneers AIF. Can somebody look up their action around September 19th 1917 and maybe explain how it was that one of there members was wearing a 1st division battle patch on that day?
