I found this lapel badge amongst my grandfathers things. It was a bit of a surprise since he was in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. His brothers were in the Seaforth Highlanders and none of his, or his wife's, relatives have come up as Royal Scots.
I wondered if anyone could suggest how I might identify the owner. The Long, Long Trail shows a 9th (Reserve) Battalion which seems not to have served overseas. I wonder if this is the origin of the badge.
As an aside, can anyone explain what is meant by Battalion numbering like 1/9th, 2/9th - are they separate groups or sub-divisions of an existing Battalion?

Keith,

Look at http://www.1914-1918.net/51div.htm where you will notice that the 1/9 Royal Scots served in the 51st Highland Division for two years in the 154th Brigade.  In that same Brigade during the same period was a Bn of the Argylls.  This may explain how your grandfather acquired the 9th Royal Scots badge you have displayed.
