I would really love to find out some more information on my great-grandfather who fought in WW1.
He was a Private in the 14th battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Name: Thomas Benjamin Jones, Reg.no.55313.
He was gassed in June 1917. He survived and carried on duty.
I'm trying to find out what happened to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers around that time. Any historical info. would be very much appreciated. Would there be any diaries to see.

He appears on a RWF caslist dated 6/9/1917. The list is quite a big one and it is my opinion that it is of the Third Ypres ( Pilkhem Ridge,Paschendaele) of 31/7 to 2/8.

Home address- 10 Oxley St, St Helens.

His previous number 2427 will be a TF number indicating previous residence in North Wales area?

I take it you are aware of his 'pension' papers. I've not read them properly yet.

I see that he also has papers in the 'Service' records.
Those that I have read confirm he was a 7th Battalion Territorial (as 2427) and from 31 Lord St, Blaenau Festiniog. He was posted to the 14th Bn in December 1916 when he was renumbered to 55313. He was wounded 28/7/1917 and returned to duty 30/7/1917. Haven't seen the gassing incident yet. There's about 27 pages

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much! You have everything spot on and more stuff I didn't know about!
In his papers I could just make out he was gassed and had 24hrs leave. That must tie in with the dates you have given me.
I have read about the battle of Mamtez Woods, which the RWF were in? Do you think he would have been in that too?
I will always be truly amazed as to what these men went through. I so look forward to having info of the diaries.
Can I ask what a caslist is?

Hello and welcome. My dad's brother Tommy died of wounds Februaury 1917 following a trench raid with the 14th R.W.F. He also had facial wounds 1916 probably Mametz.
The chances are your Gt Grandfather and Tommy served and endured together.
I have the diary extract and letters from him and others sending condolence to his parents if you are interested. My mail is pistyllg@btopenworld.com
