The WD of the 19th DLI, attached to the 113th If Bde, has them in an attack towards Martinsart wood, I think, with the 14th RWF on 22nd April 1918 which seems to falter.

I can't figure the objective of the attack from the WD. Was it a minor tactical advance or something more, or something less, like a trench raid.

It seems unlikely with so many men involved.

My Gt. Uncle Major Charles William Howes of the 19th DLI  was killed in this attack and I wonder also what was the purpose of this action. Also does any Forum Member have a copy of the appropriate trench map.

Roger.

From the casualty list in the WD appendix NYD(N)

What does that mean, NYD(N)  ?
