Pals

I've been reading a diary of a soldier who mentions being sent for some rest and recreation to a camp near Ypres, Red Rose Camp.   He mentions this in his account twice, placing it at both  Vlamertinghe and  Winnizeele.  It appears to have been composed of wooden huts and to have been relatively close to the fighting but far enough back to ensure there was no danger to the men.  Were such camps, as opposed to tented camps around the front, common?  Any help appreciated.
