Evening,

I can only find 1 document on Ancestry and War heros about my great grandfather.

He lost his arm in WW2 in France..From what I understand it was amputated by the Germans, he survived the war.

Connaught Rangers, Royal Munster Fusiliers , I belive the 3rd Battalion, from another thread I came across on this forum.
Regimental Number 4872, 14055
Born - 2 Nov 1895 (Battersea, London)
Died 8 Aprl 1970 (Wandsworth, London)

This is the only document I can find on Ancestry -----------> British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 Record for William M Drewett (could anyone explain what medals he recieved on that document? I've done some reading, it's all v.new to me..!!)

Would anyone be able to see if they can find any more information? documents?

Or even where aprox he may of been in battle?

Thanks, in advance for any tips anyone might have. It would thrill my Nan to be able to find out some more information about her dad! Like many, he never spoke of the war

He also has a silver war badge entry on ancestry.You refer to ww2 which i am taking as a typo, The majority of service records for ww1 were lost due to bombing in ww2 so chances are his records did not survive.john
Enlisted 14/11/14 dicharged due to wounds 10/7/19.

I am now confused, if I am on the wrong track. The link you gave me states 'Cork' at the bottom, surley he wasn't in Ireland? Or is that where the location of the office was?

William's medal card shows entitlement to British War Medal (BWM), Victory Medal (VM) and the 1914/1915 Star (having landed in France on 2nd May 1915).

Hi Cork would have been the Munsters Depot it would not be unusual for a man being ill to be discharged through the Batallion at the depot. A family member of my own joined the RDF in Warrington and trained in Ireland no hard and fast rule.john
PS there is also service records on ancetry for Thomas Drewett of Wandsworth Road Clapham, at that time and up untill i was a child part of the Borough of Battersea. A brother maybe.

Hi,

On 7 July 1916 the 3^rd Battalion Connaught Rangers furnished a draft of 200 Other Ranks transferred to the 3^rd Royal Munster Fusiliers for service with the 1^st Royal Munster Fusiliers in France

His Royal Munster Fusiliers regimental number would most likely make him part of this draft. Also his Connaught Rangers regimental number and date enlisting would have him enlisting into the 3rd Battalion Connaught Rangers.

On 2 May 1915 2nd Lieutenants N S B Kidson and W A Taaffe with 410 Other Ranks proceeded from the 3rd Battalion Connaught Rangers to join the 1st Battalion Connaught Rangers. Major A G Kemball 31st Punjabis and Lieutenant I Garvey proceeded as far as the Overseas Base as draft conducting Officers and returned as soon as duty completed. He would have been part of this draft. He seems to have returned to the 3rd Battalion later, prehaps after he was wounded.

This is a list I have been working on of the draft to the Royal Munster Fusiliers the 14*** number is the regimental number for the Royal Munster Fusiliers the 2nd number is the Connaught Ranger number.
