What a sad, sad story this is! I was reading an article today about the problems they are having in Paris with sites contaminated with Radium after the early century's Radium Craze and they happened to mention the Radium Girls from World War One. Never having heard the term before I gave it a Google and learned a bit about it:

A little more on this story, for those who are interested.

Another great article on the girls from Wired Magazine:

The Radium Girls: Wired Science

Was there anything even close to this type of horror (i.e., people being poisoned by Radium) and subsequent cover-up in other countries at the time?

A little good news in this story is that at least in Illinois, their sacrifices were memorialized last year:

Radium Girls Memorial

A documentary on the Radium Girls (102 minutes) is accessible via this link"

Initially it wasn't watch dials that were painted with radium but compass roses. The radium craze went to extreme lengths including radium impregnated jock straps (to improve fertility!) and even luminous condoms (the mind boggles).

That's just horrible!

It makes you wonder about the 'safe' products we use today that in time will prove deadly.

I just found a great link to the actual newspapers of the day detailing the plight of the Society of the Living Dead:

The Case of the Living Dead Women
