Hope other forum pals have heard about this series of lectures, if I was clever I would copy the link, but I'm not, so Google Eastbourne Redoubt and  I am sure you will find it.
August Jeremy Banning
September Richard van Endem
October Andy Robertshaw
Looks very interesting.

I am currently immobile following foot surgery so perhaps I will make more rapid progress with my WW1 research. At least the sun has started to shine in Eastbourne at long last!

Hello Joan

This has been posted on the Events section : Hope to attend, they look fascinating.
Myself and my other half are going to Germany in September so not sure if I can make the Richard van Endem lecture which is a shame; his talk at GWF  conference in March of this year was excellent. Hope that you soon become mobile again.

First of the Eastbourne Redoubt talks has gone well. First time I had ever visited the Redoubt museum, it is superb. Jeremy's talk on the La Boisselle Study Group was very inspiring, drew on both historical research and conflict archaeology, impressed.
Sorry didn't get the chance to introduce myself , will be following Jeremy's website.

Yes, it was excellent, wasn't it? I visited La Boisselle in May with two other Forum members but still learned more from Jeremy's talk.  Thanks to Ryan (Salientpoints) for (I believe) instigating these talks.
Sorry not to have been able to say hello to you, Michael.

An excellent talk, as ever, by Jeremy, and the cool casemates of the Redoubt are a splendid venue, especially on a day as hot as yesterday.  Good to meet Ryan, and thanks to him for organising the lecture series.  Good to see Joan again too, (and I hope your foot recovers soon) and to meet forum pal Peter Smith.  Also to see Richard Dunning (owner of the Lochnagar Crater) again.  Sorry I didn't get to talk to Michael Bully  —  or did I, and we simply failed to introduce ourselves?

Yes should also have acknowledged Ryan's superb organising skills , and the staff at the Redoubt Museum were also very helpful.
For the next Redoubt talk, let's try and co-ordinate a meeting for all GWF pals who attend and want to introduce themselves. Shame that I missed saying hello to Liz, Mick, and Joan.

I had in mind that you had said you would be there, Michael, and after Jeremy pointed me out as the La Boisselle Study Group's German translator, I thought you might perhaps introduce yourself during the tea interval.  I'm in Normandy on 15 September, so I'm afraid I shall miss meeting you at the next one too.

I too enjoyed the talk yesterday. My battlefied touring has mainy been to the Ypres Salient, although have done one day on the Somme, Thiepval, Beaumont Hamel etc so it was good to learn more. I ooked at the website on my return home and found it very informative. It was good to see some famiiar faces and hear some familiar names. Getting together before the next lecture seems like a good idea.

At risk of lighting a bue touch paper I was encouraged to hear Jeremy acknowledge that decisions about battlefied sites shoud be left to the French and Belgians as it is their land. I have sometimes encountered the oppposing view on the forum.

Ok for the next two Redoubt talks, perhaps any GWF pals who want to meet up could meet in the cafe next door before the Talk or after ? Would be happy to try to co-ordinate it nearer the time .

Thanks for the nice comments about the lecture (and also for those on Twitter who tweeted their appreciation). I found it reassuring to see that despite the perfect opportunity to escape during the tea break the audience trooped back in for the Q&A session. It was lovely to meet everyone who introduced themselves and I apologise if I missed anyone. My thanks to Ryan Gearing for organising the day.
I have written a short piece about the talk on my blog: http://jeremybanning...g.co.uk/blog/
Best wishes,
Jeremy

Sorry for not spotting this topic earlier - As a trustee thank you for coming and supporting the first of what we hope at the museum will be a regular attraction - in addition of course to the Royal Sussex Regiment collection, Queens Royal Irish Hussars and Sussex Combined Services collection.

Apologies for what at times may have appeared slightly chaotic but we are building on this from the word go and it is a work in progress. With over 20 additional people turning up on the day, we did have to squeeze you in to avoid turning anyone away as it was a truly superb presentation and one I personally would hope to run an update on in the next year or two. However I think we can say it was a successful mission nonetheless.

So, moving forward (with blackout blinds ordered and refreshments in the museum part) we do have on Saturday 15th September, Richard van Emden on his talk "The Quick and the Dead" and on Saturday 13th October Andy Robertshaw on "The Making of War Horse the Movie".

All proceeds go towards the upkeep of the collections and in developing more events such as these as we are lacking in this neck of the woods such engaging topics for the wider audience and from a purely historical point of view what a fantastic location to develop a series of military history talks....

Don't forget, your ticket includes entry to the museum so come early and enjoy everything on offer! http://www.eastbournemuseums.co.uk/

Hope to see you all there again in a few weeks!

Ryan

p.s. any suggestions or offers for assistance regarding 2013 please drop me a line, possibly April/May/June and/or Sept/Oct suggestions as the summer months do become tricky for people to attend with holidays and for presenters.

Yes  Ryan, I think that the event can be considered a success. And I can't be the only person who had never been to the Redoubt Museum before the talk, and was pleased to be introduced to the building so to speak.
Also encouraging to see Jeremy's account of the talk on his blog.
Holding the talk in the casement added to the atmosphere and was quite cool, but if the other talks start attracting much more interest, can they be held in a larger room at the venue ? Or should people be warned to check on the day if there are still tickets available in case they've sold out?
(I have bought tickets for all three! )
Regards
Michael Bully

Thanks all. We will monitor ticket sales accordingly still, they are accounted for but someone should be checking. As for another venue we really want to focus on the museum and surroundings in terms of developing it so to arrange this in a hotel "up the road" so to speak would really be against the purposes of the events (as I think all the casemates are the same size), but all noted and we'll be making the next one more comfortable in terms of making a little more space available.

Regards
Ryan

Richard Van Emden's talk on 'The Quick and the Dead' was most impressive. I had heard him give this talk at the GWF pals conference in March , but most pleased to hear it again. So important to look at how the Great War impacted on those who lost men who had been fighting.
Well done again to Ryan for putting this event on and hopefully will increase interest on Richard's book  'The Quick and the Dead' , and on the Redoubt museum itself.
Regards,
Michael

I too greatly enjoyed the talk. Richards talk focussed on exactly the angle of the Great War that I am interested in...the soldiers and their families. Many of the stories Richard told resonated with stories from my own family. Nice to meet you Michael
