I am assisting a relative of mine to gain more information regarding her great grand father that served on the following vessels during WW1:

1913 HMS Highflyer
1914 HMS Endymion
1915 HMS Ajax
1916 HMS Dee
1916 HMS Orcadia
1917 HMS Dolphin
1917 HMS Bonaventure
1917/18 HMS Hebe
1918 HMS Titania
1919 C13, G2 ,U86
I would like to know more about his experiences and the crew that he served with. Will appreciate if anyone have more information for me. My relative is in pocession of all his medal. He received the Distinguished Service Cross in 1919 received for services in action with enemy submarines.
Where can one obtain the crew list of the ships listed above?
Thanks in advance

Have a look at this link: http://www.nationala...avy-service.asp

You can search and download over 600,000 service records for most ratings who joined the Royal Navy between 1853 and 1923 in the Registers of Seamen's Services ( ADM 188) and the Continuous Service engagement books (ADM 139).

These records can tell you about your ancestor's birth, their physical appearance, their occupation and which ship(s) they served on. Details of service are recorded up to 1928.

He was 'gazetted' on the award of the 'Cross' in the Edinburgh Gazette: http://www.edinburgh...es/982/page.pdf and the London Gazette:http://www.london-ga...s/2358/page.pdf

Hallo Nantes (same reply here from we like in u-boat-net):

well, crew lists for the vessels above? I don't know.

Looks like you already have the service records for Robert V. Mack? If not, look here:

I can help you a little bit with the british submarines, of course:

Robert V. Mack was 1st Lieutenant on C 13 from March to August 1918. That boat belonged to the XI. Flotilla at Blyth, used for local defence.

Lt. Mack was replaced by Sub-Lieutenant Kidston on 23.08.1918.

Than he went over to submarine G 2 of the same Flotilla, taking part in three patrols in the North Sea until the war ceased.

But during that short timespan he was present when the german U 78 was sunk by G 2 on 27.10.1918 - what should be the reason for him to receive the D.S.C.

See here for U 78:

I have no details of his service on the ex-german U 86, but he was commanding officer (C.O.) of the ex-german U 126 for some time.

According to U 126's logbook for March 1920 he was C.O., but I haven't checked all of U 126's logbooks yet.

All of her surviving logbooks from TNA:

So, if you have anything on Lt. Mack's service on U 86 (dates?) that would be very welcome!

Oliver

There are ships logs at our National Archives in the ADM53 series for some of these ships.I just looked for three of them in the Catalogue, they are not readable online, merely a list of the books and the dates they cover.  No crew details inside them ordinarily, just movements and incidents:

AJAX. 1915.    ADM53/33006 to 33015.
DEE. 1916.     ADM53/39552 to 39557,and,
ORCADIA. 1916. ADM53/53539 to 53540,only two logs for the period 29 Sep 1916 to 30 Jan 1917.

There will be others, this is just a sample.
