Thanks Jane

I've been following the story in the local press, as it's been developing.

An article from the Liverpool Echo on the subject with mention of an Old Birkonian, Birkenhead Institute boy, now aged 91, who remembers planting trees when he was 11 years old as one of 88 boys to plant trees in 1931 in Ingleborough Field in memory of former students at his school who died in the war.

Thanks for posting Sea Jane & Caryl: Caryl  have also seen this on the Wilfred Owen Association Facebook group, would welcome updates from Liverpool Echo, as I think that the local angle is particularly important.

Thanks for the update Caryl. Not really the result that I had hoped for. But perhaps  the issue has generated some interest in Wilfred Owen and projects being dedicated to his memory.

If the playing fields were sold to the club by the council for use as a training ground, I'm surprised that there wasn't a clause in the contract providing for any windfall profit from its future sale for development to revert to the council.

Update from the Liverpool Echo

'
Government halts Tranmere Rovers FC’s plan for memorial field sell off

'Controversial decision by Wirral council to allow houses to be built on a World War I memorial field was halted by the Government.
Secretary of state Eric Pickles is now reviewing the planning application by Tranmere Rovers FC to build up to 90 new houses on Ingleborough Field, in Birkenhead.
The move could result in a public inquiry into the decision by the council.....'

Update here. Mr Pickles doesn't want to get involved... isn't that his job?

Thanks once more Caryl for your commitment in keeping us updated. Yes it does rather look as campaign has been lost, apart from a memorial plaque being permitted to remain.

Interesting else where that the great and the good had a touch of the vapours when a metal memorial turned up on E Bay , but when it comes to a few bob being made with houses and a sports centre on the go ,out goes any thought of the war dead .

More news and this time more positive for those who wish to save the memorial field. 'Birkenhead Institute old boys have set the wheels in motion to raise enough funds to purchase the site of their former school at Ingleborough Road'
