I am very sad indeed to inform GWF members that Tom Rutherford died this afternoon. There can be very few members of this forum who have not been assisted by his erudition, impressed by his power of argument or tickled by his wit. He had been diagnosed with terminal cancer some time ago but, typically, did not want what he would have termed a ‘mawkfest’ on the forum and we respected his wishes.

Tom was a kenspeckle  figure – in many ways, birdlike, having a sparse frame and restless inquisitiveness - a wee mannie with an enormous character to compensate. He was born into a poor family in Dundee and had no higher education but he was phenomenally widely-read and proficient in the realms of higher mathematics and, although he only played the moothie and autoharp ‘by ear’, he also had a wide understanding and appreciation of classical music. Those of us who knew him well were treated to tales related to his many jobs – soldier in the Black Watch; messenger for a London firm of insurers; cleaner of government offices; foreman on a building site; computer technician; sales assistant at B&Q and union representative amongst them – and we would urge him to write them down. Sadly, he never did – it would have been an autobiography worth reading.

I shall miss him more than I can say and the forum will be a poorer place for his passing. RIP Tom.

I was worried that something serious had happened to our Tom and it saddens me that my fears were true.
We often chatted on the forum and he followed my kid's sports with interest (and wit)
I shall also miss him and my thoughts are with his close friends and family.
RIP Tom, I will miss you :poppy:

Thanks for letting us know Ian.

Tom was a good friend of mine, and I shall very much miss his dry wit and wisdom, founded on a lifetime's experience - both were undimmed when I saw him for the last time in hospital not long ago. Tom was a wee man with a big heart.

I had the pleasure of meeting and having a few coffees with Tom, in Aberdeen, some years ago.
We had shared memories and interests excluding WW1 e.g.Dundee and its surrounds in the 1950's,the Broons and Oor Wullie, so both enjoyed our time together and kept in touch via the Forum,e-mail and Facebook.
We had tentatively arranged to meet up for a coffee the next time Tom was down, in the Lancashire, visiting his Sister but alas when I last e-mailed him,to ask his plans, he was forced to admit his health prevented a visit but he was looking forward to "getting home and catching up on the Forum".
Tom took a great interest in "our" adopted Home i.e. Aberdeen and we had fun discussing it from afar.
I know I have lost a friend and a modern insight into the City I grew up in.
Look after yourself Tom.
Best wishes
George Souness

I was fortunate to have been a friend of Tom in the last few years, and even more fortunate to have visited the battlefields with him several times. Tom was a good and gentle man, great company and a man whose breadth and depth of knowledge of so many subjects was outstanding. As Ian said he had been ill for some time but bore his illness with great fortitude and was surrounded to the end by loving and caring family and friends. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.

I was privileged to count Tom a good friend, though I only knew him in cyberspace.  Ian has mentioned the unwritten autobiography - oh, what a great read that would have been; still I have the memories of the snippets Tom was wont to share with us.  Yes, he will be greatly missed.  Rest in peace, young Thomas.

Saddened and shocked to hear the news. Sincere condolances to family and friends. I was always astounded by the depth of Tom's knowledge and he replied to many of my queries with interesting information, but he didn't 'blether' on. His posts were short, succint, to the point, yet absolutely spot on.
I'll miss his presence on the forum

RIP Tom
