My 2x Great Uncle Christopher Crossdale joined the RFC on the 1st August 1917.....possibly having already been in the Army and was transferred to the RAF on 1st April 1918. I would appreciate some help in interpreting his service record as I don't understand the abreviations. I can just about make out Blandford which I presume means he was based there for some of the time. he was classifed as an Air Mech 3 and I would love to know what his role would have been, he had been a tape labourer in a cotton factory in peace time and as far as I know he wasn't trained as a mechanic.
He was classified as unfit and awarded the Silver war badge on 24th March 1919

Air Mechanic 3rd Class was his rank and not necessarily indicative of his air force trade

7ARS = No.7 Aircraft Repair Section (formed at Shrewsbury as recently as 8 May 1918)

6SDP = No.6 Stores Distributing Park (at Longdale Road, Lincoln)

Blandford was a large camp (or camps?) to where many airmen were posted pending their demobilisation

Many Thanks for your reply Errol, almost all of my Ancestors were in the Army or Navy so I have no experience of reading RAF records, your reply is very helpful and will start me off on the trail of Christopher.
Thankyou once again
Joan
