I have been putting together a list of 8th Hants POW's

From a list taken during the later part of the Great War and archived as FO 383-341,

I have 330768 Swadling F located at Yarbachi 13/11/1917, but Soldiers died lists 330768 Swadbury Frank having died 12/8/1917.
A medal card for Swadling Frank, has the number 2329, has had the number 330768 crossed out, so there must have been a mix up even then.

As I don't have access to the medal cards anymore can anybody tell me if there is a 8th Hants card to a Swadbury F, and what number he has just to check it is 330768, and if it has a preceding four digit number.

I am assuming that 2329 Swadling F was a POW, but due to poor records was recorded as 330768.

Whilst it was 330768 Swadbury Frank, who died

I haven't got Ancestry to check, but allowing for mis-transcription, this looks like your man's MIC here

Hi Phil
Thanks for your efforts. Soldier Died states it was Swadbury Frank who died, but I can find no MIC for him

Even in the NA list there is a mistake, as the disputed number is not 830768, but 330768 from the block issued to the 8th Hants.

Gareth,

I rushed that a bit - Food over Forum.

Looking a bit deeper, I can't find a Frank Swadbury anywhere, but there are a couple of eligible Frank Swadling's on FreeBMD and the 1911 Census index.

I think the MIC on NA probably has a simple typo/mis-transcription, mixing up the 8 that should be a 3.

On my SDGW  Frank Swadbury's number is actually 330708, which makes it even more suspect.

Phil

I am coming to the conclusion there never was a Frank Swadbury.  My printed SDGW  has 330768, but it is very feint.

Interesting that he is recorded as Swadbury on the Newport, Isle of Wight memorial;

The surname Swadbury appears to have completely died out in England by this time.
