Recently finished reading 1914 by Sir John French whilst on holiday. It was interesting to get the view from the CIC perspective. His dislike of Horace Smith-Dorrian & Kitchener was quite clear as was his admiration of Allenby, Joffre & Foch. Although I'm not sure I'd trust the judgement of a man who can describe David Lloyd George as 'One of the greatest of the Empire's sons'. It also made me smile when French claimed that he knew his battle with the government over munitions shortages would end his command of the BEF.................there was no mention of the performance at Loos at all
