I undertook some research on West End (nr Southampton) War Memorials (we have 3!), and the following might be of interest, if you don't have them already:

CURTIS, George Henry, 10743, 2nd Hampshire
CURTIS, Frederick John, 10747, 2nd Hampshire
LIGHT, Walter J, 10779, 2nd Hampshire
LIGHT, Bertie James, 10954, 2nd Hampshire

all lost on the "Royal Edward"; another Curtis, Leslie, 19653, 10th Hampshires (brother of the above) had died the day before at Suvla, while a half-brother, William Harry, 4761 1st Doresetshire, had died in the Salient in June.

Altogether, 8 men from the village died aboard the "Royal Edward", and another 6 died on the peninsula.

I may have two more sets of brothers-of course you've probably already identified them: Privates James and David Boardman. James was 23 and died with 1/5th Lancashire Fusiliers on 7th May 1915, James. 27, was with 1st LF and was killed during the landings on 25th April. Both are commemorated on Helles. The Bury Times Book of Honour records both as from Sion Street, Radcliffe, Bury and working at Outwood Colliery. By the time of the CWGC register both of their widows had remarried. James's wife, now Mrs Jones was living at 174 Sion Street while Mrs Cassidy, widow of David, had emigrated  to Canada. I can't be absolutely certain that they were brothers, rather than say cousins, from the brief obits given in the Book of Honour. The more detailed versions in the Bury Times itself for 1915 will probably confirm it. They are certainly closely related, as will be evident from the photographs which I can provide!
The other two are Lance-Corporal John and  Private Joseph Pooley, 26 and 23 respectively of Smithy Fold, Affetside, Bury. John of 1/5th LF was killed on August 7th, Joseph of 1/7th 'about August 8th'. Both are commemorated on Helles. CWGC give both dates of death as 7th August. Again I can provide photographs.

You've got me going now-I also have the Tennant brothers, Fred and Harry, from 103 Walshaw Road Bury, who both served with 1/5th LF. Private Fred (20) died of wounds 26th June 1915, Lance-Corporal Harry (27) was killed on 7th May 1915. Fred is buried at Lancashire Landing, 'James Henry', as per CWGC on  Helles Memorial.

Fred was born at Kimberworth, Rotherham, Yorkshire, Eng & came to Australia with his family age 2, he attended Mildura Grammar School, and took up the occupation of Fruit Grower.

"The chaos of that first day was long remembered by Bill Groves of C Company:
The shooting started and we got caught in the crossfire....[the battalion was then given orders to dig in] I was on the shovel and a fellow named Fred Adams was on the pick.  He got shot through the forehead and he died instantly."



ADAMS, Edgar Robert Colbeck - 8th Bn AIF, D Coy, 14 Platoon, enlisted at Mildura 16/9/14, sailed 22/12/14 on the A32 'Themistocles', died whilst a Turkish POW on or about 25/4/15, commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, age 18.
Edgar was born at Mildura, Aust, attended Koorlong School & had Private Tuition, and was entering into the field of Surveying & Engineering.
His nickname was Rolun.

"One of the mysteries which remains unresolved to this day, is the disappearance of Private Edgar Adams. This soldier was posted missing after the initial landing, as no member of the unit could shed any light on his fate.  However, on 1st November, a member of 9th Battalion found  a bottle washed up on the beach near Alexandria.  The message stated that Adams was held as a prisoner, but as he did not appear on any POW lists provided by the Turks, it was assumed that he had not been captured.  Nonetheless, if the message was genuine, Adams was the only member of the 8th Battalion captured by the enemy during the Gallipoli campaign."

The message in the bottle washed ashore at Montaza Beach, Alexandria read:  "Am prisoner about 2 miles from where we landed between the dried lake and the other - E.R.C. Adams 8 AIF"

An inquiry was held and the finding was that he died on or about 25/4/15 in Turkish hands.

[from a Diary entry by Pte FH Symonds published in the Inglewood Advertiser, 1/10/1915:]
"20th May 1915:  Heard the other day that Fred and Rolun Adams, of Mildura, whom I know well, were killed and missing respectively since the first Sunday, so looks like both dead.  Terribly hard for their parents, as they are the only two boys in the family. I feel set up over it, as they were such decent chaps."


Both their War Service records are available on-line, and their photos are on the  AWM website.

They had a sister Mrs S.F. Streatfield who had been a Staff Nurse in the AIF [and appears to have married & stayed in India]
Their father died somewhere between 1919 & 1921, and their mother went back to England for a while around this time.
