Pals

Just to let you all know that this church had now been deconsecrated & the roll of honour is in private hands - Mine.

The reason I have this Roll of Honour is due to the fact that it was made by my Great Grandfather & the calligraphy was done by my Great Uncle. When the church was due for deconsecration the clergy were approached and asked if the roll could return to the family who made it (mine) ONLY IF THE ROLL OF HONOUR WAS TO BE REDUNDANT & THEREFORE DESTROYED. Unfortunately & sadly so in my opinion, the church had no intention to re-hang the roll in the parent church & they gave it back to my family!

[size=2]IF ANYONE REQUIRES PICTURES OF THIS ROLL OF HONOUR OR A LIST OF NAMES COMMEMORATED ON IT PLEASE CONTACT ME[size="1"] I will be more than happy to do this.

For background information the roll of honor is dedicated to "The Memory of Herbert & Arthur Joyce - from the remainder of their family - And of the undermentioned comrades who made the supreme sacrifice" & marked 1914 1919. It comprises of a wooden frame with a glazed front covering a paper panel with 142 names on it. The frame was made by John Arthur Goulter & the calligraphy was done by Thomas Leslie Goulter (known as Leslie).

I have started research of those listed & as far as I can assertain, from the 35 I have researched so far (CWGC records), not all came from the same regiment/unit & not all came from Addlestone. All I can think is that as this was made in the early 1920s some of the names may belong to familys who moved to Addlestone post war.

Any information would be most gratefully received (especialy in regard to Herbert and/or Arthur Joyce) & no doubt I will be asking you all for assistance with some of those listed as my research progresses.

IT - I quite agree with your sentiments about the lack of interest shown in reconsecrating the roll of honour in another church. That said, it is in safe hands with you. If you publish the full list of names, I am sure that the Forum will assist in telling some of the stories.

Glad to hear that it is in good hands but sad to hear that the local church wouldn't re-site it.

Good to hear the Roll of Honour is in safe and sympathetic hands. What a shame the Church would not move it to another location.

I am researching our local memorial and have found that many of the men appear to have little connection to the Parish - most memorials were composed in the early 1920's and relied on local people submitting information, so, as you say some of the men listed may be from families who moved into the area, during or even after the war. As well as CWGC I have used Soliders Died in Great War. I have also looked at the local school records (the headmaster helpfully annotated the admission register whenever an old boy was killed), the parish registers and the census on 1901 too. My next quest is to look atthe Church Faculty papers at the Record Office (a faculty is the permission given by the church authorities for anything to be added/changed in a church - sothe records can contain quite a lot of detail).

Have you looked for The Joyce's on the 1901 census?

Good luck in your quest.

Your're welcome - don't forget the local newspapers too - usually on microfilm at the local library.

Good luck

Good gracious me! no wonder that British people are turning their backs on the church if it's full of morons like that...

I'm glad it's gone to someone who appreciates what the thing really signifies... Well done that man.

Leonard Percy Frank A'Court's only service was with the 6th Buffs. He was born and lived in Addlestone and enlisted at Guildford (as a conscript).

The Battalion moved into trenches in the Mailly Maillet sector on 20/5/1918 to relieve the 7th Royal Sussex. During occasional shelling of the front and support lines on 23/5/1918 he was killed along with William Brodie from Chatham.

Thanks Mick.

I could be coming back to you again as with 242 names on this memorial I'm wouldn't be surprised if other Buffs appear.

Do you want a photograph of Leonards name on the memorial Roll?

Cheers

Thank you so much for that. It brings it home even more to now be able to see the face behind one of the names.

Any more that pals have in their collections would be most appreciated.

If it turns out that a reasonable number of your names were in either of the Surrey Regiments then this will probably be  a very good buy for you and at a modest price:

I have just started to research my Great Grandad  Bartram. James E -     Pt 7562     7th Bn East Surrey Regiment.  I do not know very much at all about him, as he died when my Nanna was about 4 years old.  Would it be possible to have a copy of the photo that you have of the memorial?  I would love to find out more about him.

Thank you

Deborah

Hi Deborah

Thanks for contacting me. Always good to hear from a relative of one of the Addlestone men.

I am not at home and therfore do not have access to my research but off the top of my head I seem to remember James being buried in Poziers British Cemetery. If I am correct then I have visited his grave and along with photo's of the memorial I can also provide you with photo's of both the cemetery and his grave. I also seem to remember that George and Percival Cranston (from Ottershaw, Surrey) were cousins of James Bartram and they were also both killed. George Cranston's body was never identified/found and he is coincidentaly named on the memorial wall in the same cemetery that James Bartram is buried. Percival Cranston is buried in belgium. Having also visited Percival's grave I can also provide you with photo's of Georges inscription on the memorial wall and Percival's grave if you wish.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head so please send me an email to 14.18war at googlemail.com and I will be more than happy to reply with a copy of my research and the photos I mentioned.

Best wishes

Andy
