Can someone please point me in the direction of a detailed (British Army) map of the Doiran area around the time of the battle on 24/25 April 1917 and particularly 79th Brigade's assault on Petit Couronne?
I'm reading the War Diary of the 8th DCLI (a friend's relative was with them and died that night), and am trying to work out the locations mentioned, esp. the following:

Switch Hill Camp
Stonehenge Dump
Minden Camp
Hampshire Ridge Camp
Silbury Hill
The Sunken Road
B Sector
Rocky Knob
Y Ravine

Also these locations on the front to the east of the lake, to where 8th DCLI were transferred a few days later:

Sal Grec Camp (is this Popovo?)
Hairy Hill
Lucky Hill
Bermondsey Ridge
Pin Hill

I'm quite a novice at this! What are the standard works on this battle? My library to date includes Under the Devil's Eye and, er... well, that's about it actually!  tongue.gif

Thanks for any help!

Adrian

Adrian,

Both the authors of "Under the Devil's Eye" frequent the forum and will be on the battlefield in late September - you could always buy them (and me ...) a drink. You might like to try PM'ing Alan Wakefield via the forum.

The UK National Archives hold a good range of trench maps for the campaign, but you need to know exactly which one you want.

There is the Salonika Campaign Society - See http://www.salonika.freeserve.co.uk/  Well worth joining

The site has a fairly good bibliography (Alan & Simon omit their own book however)

If you need any further guidance on the Nat. Archives maps drop me a PM or email.

Martin

Thanks for the reply, Martin.

I had been trying (though not very hard!) to contact Alan Wakefield by email and PM for a while with a view to joining the Campaign Society, but had not received an answer. Earlier today Alan saw this thead and replied by PM, full of apologies - he's hard at work trying to finish another book! So I'll send off my membership fee tomorrow and meet you all at Doiran in September.

Alan has said he'll dig out a map for me, but I'll PM you my email address because I would be very grateful for a guiding hand through the mysteries of the NA. It took me ages to work out how to order a few pages from 8th DCLI's war diary! Thank you for your kind offer.

Regards from Salonika,
Adrian
