I have an old postcard of the war memorial at Garrigill, Cumbria. I have been trying to
identify the men listed but have been having a problem with a few as they have common
names, or the CWGC lists many with the same initials.

I was wondering if anybody with access to SDGW might be able to help me by searching
for men from Garrigill who were killed with the names on the memorial.

On it are the following names (I have added the information I have):

Thomas Henderson

Hugh William Jackson - I think this is H. W. Jackson (50443) RGA, Killed 27/9/16, Salonika

Frank Norman Millican - No. 244795, 4th/5th Bn Loyal North Lancashire Reg. Killed 26/10/17,
Tyne Cot Memorial

John Robson

Walton Shield - No. 241211, 5th Bn Border reg. Killed 23/4/17, Wancourt British Cemetery

Harry James Vipond - No. 16323, 2nd Bn. Coldstream Guards. Killed 26/2/17, Thiepval Memorial.

Johne Elliott Vipond - No. 16429, 13th Bn. DLI. Killed 14/10/16, Dernancourt Communal Cemetery.
Had won the MM

Ernest (the rest is blocked out)

Any help of filling the gaps for the men I have no details (HENDERSON, ROBSON, ERNEST?), or indeed
further information on the men for whom I have a date of death, would be great.

Johnnie

Thanks for the information.

I've had a look at some maps, and I think that John Robson 17415 could be my man
as Priorsdale as only a couple of miles from Garrigill.

I also think that Thomas Henderson 240790 could be the chap as the war memorial
does not give a meddle name, so providing it is correct (and in other cases it does state
middle names) he could be our man.

As for Hugh William Jackson I am at a bit of a loss, as that is definatly the given name on the
war memorial.

How strange. I wonder if that could be the chap and he was known as Hugh William Jackson,
or if we have somebody else not mentioned on SDGW.

There are 3 Hugh Jacksons shown in the 1901 census for Cumberland. The first was born in Northumberland. The second is Hugh E., and the last is Hugh J. - but he died in 1984.

Garrigill interests me, as my great-great-grandfather was born there in 1830. I think his father Thomas Johnson may have been from Haltwhistle, but the children were born and baptized in Garrigill.

Hugh Emmerson was born in Threlkeld, and was living in Wigton in 1901

Thought you might be interested in a picture of the memorial.

I am planning on going over there at some point to take a look
and see if it is still in place (it should be as it appears to be in a
church), and to see if I can work out who Ernest is (I am wondering
if the surname could be WASS).

Oh let's do it the easy way: http://www.fivenine.co.uk/family_history_n...l_registers.htm

But if you are going over that way, I'd love to see some pictures.

Well thats quite interesting. The memorial transcription states Hugh William Jackson
died of wounds. Is this why he might not appear of the CWGC or SDGW?

Also the only Ernest is Ernest Wymees of the Border Regiment who isn't mentioned
on the CWGC web site and isn't marked as killed on the transcription. Thomas Henderson
is also noted as East Lancashire Regiment, however he is also not noted as killed
on the transcription, but he is noted as killed on the postcard image.

The National Archives site shows a Hugh E. Jackson in the Lancashire Fusiliers, plus a lot of Hugh Jacksons in the Northumberland Fusiliers.
