Hi Guys,
I seem to find out more and more from very interesting people like you on this site and reading this topic perhaps you can help me too (again)

I read recently on one of my replies that my Great Cousin WILLIAM FRENCH PT 9964 RWF 1ST BATT now buried in Neid... was reported wounded and missing in action 20th Oct 1914 , was sent to Gottingen POW camp I knew he died 13th June 1915. Can you tell me any more? He cant have died of his wounds as it was a long time later.

William was totally unknown to us, we didnt even know of his existance until I started researching my family, I am now totally obsessed in finding out everything I can about him so that he will always be remembered. I have now got a copy of his Roll of Honour and have now framed it and thanks to the wonderful Graves commission I have a photo of his grave. It makes me cry everytime I think of him. The medals are with someone else??? there is no-one alive that can tell me anything about him or has family photos with him.

I would love to find a picture of him as I keep wondering who he looked like, did he look like my Dad.....(What is the translation on the photos above, do you have any between 1914-15)?

Anyway keep up the good work you Guys are great

I am hoping next year to visit his grave :poppy:

Hi searcher1 and welcome for a man to die of his wounds 7 or 8 months after being injured would be far from unusual and some died several years later. His chances of a good recovery were not helped in becoming a POW but may not have any effect on his condition.john

Thanks John,

Its just that I was told he probably died of starvation or sickness then to be told he was reported wounded missing in action I was wondering which of them finally killed him.
M.

How would I go about finding his service records? Please

link to his mic above had quick look for service record but drew a blank. Most service records were lost in 1940 in an air raid and resulting fire.john
